Beau geste: Melinda's new tattoo, my 3rd student piece, after two sittings. We will do one more for touch ups and fill at some point.

Breakdancer, Tänzer

With only very dark pieces left and no time to work on the puzzle during daylight, the final stage demanded a lot of attention. Although I enjoyed working on this area, it would fatigue me in no time, so I never spent more than two hours in a row on the 'blackwork'.

Piece shapes were a help throughout the puzzle. While there's only a dozen pairs of wavy-cut pieces and one (!) pair of one-knob/three-knobs-pieces in the puzzle (the rest are all standard shaped two-knobs-two-holes), the orientation of the pieces is clearly distinguishable. Vertical pieces are slim and long, horizontal pieces are wide and bellied. The ambiguous cut wouldn't allow putting in pieces based on a single-sided connection only, but slight shades of greens and browns and the diminishing number of pieces helped along the way.

Statistics

stage 1: 702 pieces in 7:50 h (90 pph / pieces per h)

stage 2: 362 pieces in 5:56 h (61 pph)

stage 3: 436 pieces in 7:36 h (57 pph)

Total: 1.500 pieces in 21:22 h (70 pph = 51 sec per piece)

Résumé

With Ravensburger clearly dominating the global and domestic puzzle market in the 1980s and Heye establishing its trademark cartoon line, local competitor Schmidt struggled to find its niche. Lots of Schmidt puzzle from that era haven't aged very well, cheesy 'romantic' images and subprime airbrush style fantasy alike. This puzzle here was an odd choice (and a style that Schmidt wouldn't invest hopes in for long), not based on the model of other European brands, but rather following examples set by US brand MB.

While not dated, the puzzle was produced between 1983 and 1989 - not earlier as it includes the common Italian advisory from 1983 on the box (not suitable for children under three years) and as it features a barcode, not later as Schmidt is still located in "W-Germany".

Working on this puzzle had to grow on me. While seeing it more as a training camp for tougher challenges first, the more I became accustomed to the unfamiliar cut, the more I enjoyed the build. The quality of the image is fine (considering the puzzle's age), the manufacturing quality doesn't live up to old school Ravensburger, but is at least enjoyable.

The difficulty level was perfect. I was able to avoid laying out the pieces in a grid-like pattern till the final ~160 pieces. Until then, even with somewhat less than perfect artificial lighting, I came along steadily, yet had to focus on every tiny detail.

An average pace of 70 pieces per hour is a nice cruising speed - neither a quick rush nor a tedious travail. While I see myself doing more puzzles that qualify for this group, I'll keep enjoying 'interludes' like this one.

The next one will be one for 'the group' ..
