Mark, a friend of mine gave up his job as an IT manager in a large corporation to start as a 45 year old apprentice as a Blacksmith. So much more brave than I to start all over again and follow his passion!

Blacksmith at work. Brings to mind the song "If I had a hammer..."

Hope to be posting more images from now on...

Today we were in the part of Edmonton known as Strathcona, which was actually part of the first settlement here other than Fort Edmonton itself. I was drawn to this sign on one of the old buildings, although it's not truly ancient as the phone number has seven digits. If you look closely, though, you can see another sign, "implements", beneath it.

A chance to see blacksmithing in action.

This is my third approach to that construction. I had an issue with the shape of the upper floor of that building, but it is finally done :) I’m happy that there is a feature with glowing bricks. When I started that MOC that feature was unavailable.

I rendered a lot of different shots, so I will probably add two post of that blacksmith’s workshop.

Regarding that scene. You can see a lot of work there, two experienced blacksmiths are working hard and one younger journeyman is grinding the blade. Other worker is on the first top. There is always a chance to sell some weapons to some unexpected group of adventurers :)

Regarding the group of adventurers, do you see that group on the road? I was inspired by one old RPG video game. It was one of the most popular games of that type. In that year or next will be released the third part of that title. Small question for you, do you know what game title I mean? :) Please leave a comment if you want.

Everyone was all set to start the 14 minute speed round when a blacksmith realized he was in the round, but wasn't ready. So everyone had to wait, poised, while he gathered his tools and went to his station. And we got some great expressions out of Vern.

I took all these photos on Saturday, April 16, 2016. My friend- Vern- asked me if I'd like to come take photos. I said I'd probably be able to do one day. Next year, I plan on going all three days.

For three days, different blacksmiths from around the world (there were some from Denmark, England, and even Australia) compete by making different horseshoes. Each round lasts an hour and they start with two flat pieces of metal. Where you see two-man teams is a novice. Novice blacksmiths have a more experienced blacksmith run their fire for them. They also do speed rounds, where they get 14 minutes to make a horseshoe after looking at a cadaver hoof for ten seconds.

This is Petri - A Maasai tribesman with a very important skill. He's a blacksmith who learned this valuable skill from his father. Quite a good salesman as well, as I purchased some of his wares as gifts for the family back in Canada.

Blacksmith Moses Wilder owned land that adjoined a stone quarry operated by his wife’s cousins in Bolton, Massachusetts. Wilder built the Blacksmith Shop using some 400 granite stones from the quarry to form the walls.

Jens is an extremely talented blacksmith. He has been forging for over 20 years and approaches his skill as an art. He firmly believes in the importance of all the elements working together and the respect of the flame and intent as he forges blocks of iron into beautiful masterpieces. Whether its the hard iron ore or soft bronze and delicate steel, he understands the metals and their needs and uses his experience and knowledge to create his work. It has been such a pleasure getting to know him and Clara and working with them as he demonstrated his craft. I am also proud to say that he used several of my photographs from our recent shoot for his new brochure advertising his business!
