Soldiers from the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh (1 R WELSH), scan the horizon for the enemy during Exercise Black Eagle in Poland.
Around 1,300 UK soldiers were honing their skills in the largest armoured deployment to Eastern Europe for six years.
The Kings Royal Hussars Battlegroup was taking part in Exercise Black Eagle under the command of the 10th Polish Armoured Cavalry Brigade and alongside the 1st Polish Tank Battalion at the Zagan Training area in south-west Poland. The exercise included both dry-training and live-firing and is designed to develop interoperability between the two Armed Forces.
Exercise Black Eagle was a key demonstration of UK support to NATO reassurance measures and follows the RAFs commitment of Typhoon aircraft to the Baltic Air Policing Mission and the deployment of HMS Montrose off the Danish coast as part of the multi-national Baltic Ops exercise in June 2014. Further deployments are expected to take place over the next two years.

These T-50Bs belong to the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) aerobatic jet display team. There are 8 aircraft in the team and are based in South Korea. To get the 8 aircraft to the UK they had to be taken apart, flown to the UK and then put back together again.

"They came flying from far away, now I'm under their spell
I love hearing the stories that they tell
They've seen places beyond my land and they've found new horizons
They speak strangely but I understand
And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please...."

I was lucky enough to see the Republic Of Korea's display team back in 2012 and was blown away by their performance, so I was delighted to hear they were coming back for the first time since.
They fly 9 T50Bs, an aerobatic variant of the supersonic advanced jet trainer. These nine aircraft were disassembled and loaded on to Boeing 747s for their transport to the UK. They flew via Thailand and Turkiye, before finally arriving at Boscombe Down. The aircraft were reassembled, checked, certified and air tested in less than 3 weeks.
The Black Eagles were awarded the King Hussein Memorial Sword, for the Best Overall Flying Demonstration and the FRIAT voted As The Crow Flies Trophy at the awards ceremony. Richly deserved!
