Cascade County. The Black Eagle post office building, seen in 2004. Located on the north side of the Missouri River, across from Great Falls, Black Eagle was named for the nearby Black Eagle Falls, which were in turn named by Lewis and Clark in 1805 for an eagle's nest found there. Black eagle began in the 1890's when a community known as Little Chicago grew up around a nearby smelter built in 1891. When a post office finally opened in 1917 (April 13), in a store in the community, the name was changed to Black Eagle. August Cor was the first postmaster and he served in that position until 1952. In 1972, the Black Eagle post office became a branch of the Great Falls post office.
