Beach at Smith Point, Long Island, USA.

There is nothing more wonderful than seeing a sunrise while on a beach, when the weather is mild enough not to freeze one's bottom. We ware able to enjoy such morning, when the ocean was quite calm (although I would prefer a bit more drama there ;D) and it was relatively warm for this time of year. And we weren't the only ones, though majority seems to have come for fishing rather, than enjoying a view ;D

A bit of an institution - it's been there at least 30 years that I know of, and probably a great deal longer! This is actually an HDR, but hopefully I had to tell you that :-)

Lilly Belle aka Little Bit wants to get cozy.

Lilly Belle alias Little Bit quiere ponerse acurrurcarse conmigo.

This was a bit of an experiment. The sun had set, which would usually mean me putting away the infrared camera, but I wondered, can you shoot infrared after sunset? Indeed you can, as long as there's at least a little light left. The semi-darkness required a long (10 second) exposure which meant that I caught this lovely lightning, but also meant that you can see some of the fantastic movement in the storm. Not an image for storm photography purists, but I sure like it.

In late May/early June 2024 I went storm chasing for the third time. If you'd like, you can read about my trip in the blog post on my website.

You can see all my storm chasing images from my 2017, 2018 and 2024 chases in this album.

Felt like a bit of colour today :) Hope you're all having a good weekend :)

Many thanks for all the kind comments and faves on my images :)

Feeling a bit better. Well, no, just took a shower and am going to work anyway. Bleh. Here's another oldie from my 2008 rail tour of the States. See, mom, a 50mm 1.8 can do quite a bit if you wield 'em right. Though, admittedly, I am pretty happy with my considerably upgraded kit, now.

A bit of a contradiction, but maybe the explanation will clear things up. One website says they are 13” long, but they seem much smaller when you see them from a distance and are difficult to spot….usually. This particular male was easy to find because he was busy calling for a mate and all I had to do was follow the calls. They usually don’t stick around and can walk though the branches of a reed like a hot knife through butter and disappear in the blink of an eye. This is a male photographed on Armand Bayou. Two shots here to give you some indication how small he is when seen from a distance in the reeds.

You can listen to the call at the link below.

I have a bit of a battle going on at the moment as I need to finish my Kent orchid and cycling book whilst my neurological condition starts to accelerate. The weather outside is poor and the office is free tomorrow as Melanie has meetings in Bromley and Ashford so I will set the desk up tonight and write between morning blood tests and afternoon physio. No plans at all to go orchid hunting in the 2025 season although as part of our 60th Birthday my brother has given us free flights to Jersey and I will try to coordinate this visit with the flowering time for the Jersey Orchid fields. Maybe I might see a few of Kent's glorious spikes on my walking trips out, which reminds me I have to load the "Where is my phone" App on my new mobile so I can be tracked just in case I get lost again!!! So no excuses, lots of coffee, the rest of the Christmas M&S chocolate biscuits and my "Classical play list" on the player......

“Jimmy Simpson Jr.” Peak: The trail is a bit steep and challenging all the way up till the end great views. Hiked on Monday, no other hikers on that day, just four of us. The start of the trailhead was difficult to find, we went to the wrong starting point, it was climber’s route (need rope), not the hiking trailhead, had to slide down along the crushed stones. Finally found the marked little orange ribbons on the trees. Bushwhacking for a good portion at the beginning part of the trail. Felt more like an animal trail and it probably was, until we were on AllTrails “path” as other hikers put the orange ribbons on the trees. We spent quite time stopping to check AllTrials map, to make sure we were on trail, and thanked all the pioneer hikers who tied orange ribbons on the trees as signs. We saw summit when we got to the first viewpoint, not realized it was so difficult to reach… steep and lots of crushed stones. We hiked zig zag patterns, used hands and feet all together for the final 100 meters...

Reaching to the summit, we were rewarded with this panoramic view of Bow Lake and the surrounding glaciers, feeling a connection to the raw power and beauty of nature. The crisp mountain air filling the lungs, and the silence of the high altitude allowing for reflection and introspection… The journey up to the peak was tough, but always rewarded with the fascinating scenery! The colors of the lake changing with wind and light, this special blue-green patterns lasted just couple of minutes!

The experiences on the summit could not be expressed with words! Especially found the black metal box, looks like finding the treasure... under the pile of stones on the summit! There was a small notebook, all the hikers who reached to the summit, wrote down their names on it. The signatures were traced back to 20 years ago! Four of us put our signatures on the last page! There would be metal boxes (Black or Pink) with notebook inside on all the challenging/difficult summits all over the world, it was an honor putting signatures on it. I was so proud of writing my signature with all other hikers' signatures in the past 20 years together in this summit!

Climbed down was a bit easy, we got the right trail path. Next time, we will take orange/pink ribbons to tie on the trees to make the path stand out to help fellow adventurers.

A bit of history: Mount Jimmy Simpson Jr. is a majestic peak located in the Canadian Rockies. It is named after a notable individual, Jimmy Simpson Jr. who loves exploring the great outdoors and is particularly fond of hiking in the Canadian Rockies. One of his favorite hiking spots is Bow Lake, located in Banff National Park, Alberta. Rising high into the sky, Mount Jimmy Simpson Jr. is adorned with rugged cliffs, snow-capped peaks, and pristine alpine meadows. Its slopes are covered in lush forests, showcasing a vibrant display of colors during the changing seasons.

Bit of a preview for that yellow thing, too!

Tried something super minimal focusing mostly on the reflected colour of the sky with a hint of reflected cloud. I quite like this shot.

A bit of a dog day yesterday. Toby was ill first thing and very weak so we took him to the vets. With dog nearly 17 we are always on edge with his health and more so yesterday. He eventually picked up a little with the help of medication and he poo’ed and ate always milestones with any dog just ask their owners. With Toby having a relatively comfortable afternoon I ventured down to Roker to see the waves in-between the horizontal drizzle/mizzle. The visibility was poor at best but I did manage a couple of snaps that were OK, thats with the amazing power of Lightroom to cut through the drab.

A bit of a haunted view of the bright white house in a clear of a forest near Capel Curig. Don't know really why but this picture stirs harrowing emotions in me, even though it was a quite pleasant and happy walking day! :)

I do like a bit of a sculpture here and there, for me this is one of the best ones I have come across. I have no interest in the reason behind it being commissioned, I have my own interpretation of the meaning behind it, and that is the thing with art, every piece of art, every single exhibit will be perceived by the viewer in a different way.

I’m too proud for love...

I can always dream about what he might look like in a few months. Deer are ever-present on the bayou, but they are not noted for standing out in the open when people are around. This would be a handsome buck when the rut arrives in the winter. Photo taken on Armand Bayou. White-tail Deer standing tall at the water’s edge.

Here's a little bit of shadow and light for your Saturday morning zen moment. I had just finished photographing the beautiful waterfall across the dirt and gravel road (Westside Road, in Mount Rainier National Park) and then walked into the forest on the side of the road where my vehicle parked. The first thing that caught my eye was that slice of sunlight right down the middle of the composition I already had framed in my head. I loved the backlighting of the Spanish moss-draped trees and the splash of light on the tree, ferns, and devil's club in front of me.

Almost all of the low-light images I capture of forest interiors are with the camera on a tripod. That way, I can use a lower ISO, keep the aperture small (f/9) and use a slower shutter speed to compensate for the ISO and aperture. Sometimes, I handhold, but I have to bump up the ISO to more than I'd like in order to use a faster shutter speed to keep from camera shake. And the images - while nice - don't always look quite as lovely as the ones taken on a tripod. This image was using the tripod.

Something a bit different

A different Perspective

“Laugh at yourself and at life. Not in the spirit of derision or whining self-pity, but as a remedy, a miracle drug, that will ease your pain, cure your depression, and help you to put in perspective that seemingly terrible defeat and worry with laughter at your predicaments, thus freeing your mind to think clearly toward the solution that is certain to come. Never take yourself too seriously.”
