Ingredients: (1 person as main for dinner, 3 for dessert)
Eggs (3 large, 4 medium or 5 small)
milk
plain flour
castor sugar
icing sugar
butter
raisins or similar (optional: soaked in rum or whisky)
Method
separate the eggs, whisk the yolks with ca. 3tbsp of sugar, add about two parts milk and then about 3 or 5 tbsp of sifted flour (whisk in the flour one by one until it's the consistency of double cream). Let the batter rest/expand for about 20 minutes then fold in the beaten egg whites until incorporated.
Heat a large, thick bottomed frying pan (cast iron is ideal), melt enough butter to generously cover the bottom, pour in the batter. Turn the heat down to medium after about a minute. When the underside starts to brown, chuck in a handful of raisins into the still liquid batter and turn the pancake over. Let brown for a bit then break up into bitesized pieces with your spatula, turn the heat down to low and continue frying for about five minutes. Turn out on plate and dust with icing sugar.
Serve with apple sauce or other fruit compote/preserve.

My second Ploughman's. This one was baguette, ham, prosciutto, white cheddar, stilton, apple, pickled onion and pickalilli.
The first one was a bitesized sausage pie, a jar of pickled cockles, a jar of pickled mussels (alive, alive-o?) the onion and a scotch egg type of thing.... I liked this one better I think.

2008 - pretty good year for music, so I've decided to compile my favourites of the year and put them on here.
I got to 35 before the quality started to dip so here starts my top 35 albums of 2008, in bitesize chunks of 5:
35) Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Lie Down in the Light
-in a strong year for alt-country this doesn’t quite hit the highs of other albums released this year (or earlier Bonnie Prince Billy albums for that matter) however it is a confident, upbeat album and a good addition to Oldhams catalogue.
Highlights: "Willow Trees Bend" + “You Remind Me of Something”
34) Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
- also wins album title of the year! Some patchy moments but when it’s good it’s gold.
Highlights: "Yesterday" + “Painting”
33) Lisa Hannigan - Sea Saw
-Damien Rices muse strikes out on her own and makes an album that is perfectly lovely.
Highlights: "Lille” + “Venn Diagram”
32) Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer
- while it’s not quite as impressive as their debut there are some strong moments here, most notably the…Highlights: “Soldiers Grin” + “Call It A Ritual”
31) Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)
Fusing multiple different musical styles (soul, hip-hop, electro, funk) sometimes even in one song and you know what? It works…
Highlights: “Twinkle” + “That Hump” + “Honey”

Here you can see the Whin Sill dolerite that forms bedrock of the channel just before it travels over the lip of the waterfall at High Force.

A Black Swan Event (def): an unexpected high impact occurrence, yet one which, it is later concluded, was 'bound to happen'.
It is early. Very early. Those who are game find a reason to get up and out, whilst those who are not snooze on. Up on Collie’s Reach two strangers' paths cross. You know how it is: you get chatting, make conversation, to be polite. As it transpires Meryl and Jamie chare a lot more than their appearances betray. Buried misunderstandings come home to roost as the two realise that some wishes just won't fly.
