This little boy's hat says he takes a big bite! ... and he certainly is enjoying one of the many treats at the Iowa State Fair which will continue through this week. Happy Bench Monday

My flu last week, wasn’t the flu.

I had noticed the bite on my arm which just looked like a little chigger bite at the time so I scratched it a little and thought nothing of it. A friend cautioned me that my symptoms sounded like Lyme disease. I thought surely not. Lyme Disease comes from ticks and this bite isn’t a tick bite because ticks don’t just let go on their own... it’s the flu. Turns out he was closer to right than I. No one else in my family caught my flu which means it probably wasn’t the flu. It was more likely a spider bite reaction.

I haven’t had the fever/chills thing in a week but my joints are still achy. The bite which started at quarter size and fairly normal looking expanded to a pancake size whelp the night after Little B broke his arm. I was too busy to pay it much attention then. Yesterday morning the outer light pink puffy area was almost from wrist to elbow, the lymph nodes under my armpit were swollen and a light red track was forming on my arm, so I called the doctor and started antibiotics. It looks a little less red and puffy this morn, but later today I go see him to determine how bad it really is.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update. Doc says it was possibly a nip brown recluse or another spider because they have a realitively painless bite and often dont cause noctiable symptoms right away. Got a little shot into the bite, got drained, and got some stonger antibiotic. I'm looking forward to not feeling old and arthritic again soon.
-------------
Second update: the steroid shot and the triple antibiotic did the trick. The red track up my arm dissapeared in a few days. The bite itself took much longer to heal. It leaked and drained out of the small crater that formed for maybe two weeks. The scab and pancake sized red area remained slighly puffy bruised looking for a couple of months. Now, 8ish months later all that remains is a puffy area the size of a quarter and a little purplish area where the crater was.
We are now fighting fleas at the rental house. Most of the house is "sparkling" clean. I only have the dining room and living room floors before I move on to the basement.
Anyone have tips on killing fleas? We have already used Hot Shot foggers and Precor 2000 aerosol spray. I understand that they can't reproduce on human blood. The new renters are moving in in two weeks
FLEA BITES look different on different people...on me the bites were tiny tiny pin points, on my nephew the bites were huge with big blisters in the middle like chicken poxs.
I was bitten by a spider, not sure what kind. I live in Oakland county michigan. I became very concerned when the redness started to spread, then within a few hours it started to travel up my arm. I marked the outline of the redness to see how much it changed. I went to the hospital and when the E.R. doctors saw how fast it had traveled they became very concerned. I was started on rapid I.V. drip of antibiotics. and saline. If you ever get bitten "do not squeeze the bite or abscess, other wise you might end up in the hospital like I did. This was taken as I was leaving my house for the hospital.
After four days, this tabano bite is still going strong, deep pain, intense itching, constant weeping of fluid.
Tabano is what we call them here. Elsewhere these flies are called deer flies, horse flies, and doctor flies. This class of insect appears in various sizes and forms but they all have the same method of biting. Unlike a mosquito that inserts a thin probe to extract blood and does relatively little physical damage, tabanids have serrated knives that they use to slash the skin open so it bleeds. A large horse fly can slash open an area two inches in diameter and do a lot of damage.
Tabanids are easily recognized by their body shape and especially by the shape of the head and eyes. The "head" of the insect looks like one giant eye with little or no visible division between the left and right eyes. The mouth parts are also distinctive and look like a thick sharp pointed wedge projecting downwards.
This focal feature of Britannia's atrium changes colour. The atrium is situated mid-ships over Decks 5(Landing Deck) - 6(Tween Decks) and 7(Main Deck).
Just slightly out of sequence with my previous photos, though not by much. This view, looking forward on Deck 7(Main Deck), was taken on 17/09/2022, when Britannia was making steady progress on the Bay of Biscay, in the North Atlantic Ocean, when heading back home to Southampton where she would arrive in the following morning. On the left of the photo, port side, is The Glass House, a fine dining bar/restaurant with wine and ale by P&O Cruises Food Hero, Olly Smith. "The perfect location for a light bite, lunchtime tipple, afternoon apéritif or a tastefully informal evening out" says www.pocruises.com/onboard-activities/dining/the-glass-house. I must admit, the food is very nice and just a small supplement applies to each course. On the right of the photo, starboard side is Java, a coffee lounge where Costa Coffee is available. Cakes and pastries are also available.
MV Britannia was completed on 26/02/2015 by Fincantieri, Monfalcone, Italy. She was laid down on 15/05/2013, launched on 14/02/2014 and Christened by the late HRH Queen Elizabeth II, on 10/03/2015 with her maiden voyage on the 14/03/2015. She is from the Royal Class of cruise ships and is British registered in Southampton. She has a GTW of 143,730, has seventeen decks of which fourteen are passenger accessible giving a maximum passenger capacity of 3,647 and 1,398 crew. She is powered by Wärtsilä 12V46F x 2 & Wärtsilä 14V46F x 2 & propulsion electric motors - 2 x VEM Sachsenwerk GMBH and is capable of 21.9 knots and a cruising speed of around 19 knots.
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
[Galatians 5:13-18 NIV]
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:
1. Like it or not, we are ALL sinners: As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” (Romans 3:10-12 NLT)
2. The punishment for sin is death: When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. (Romans 5:12 NLT)
3. Jesus is our only hope: But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8 NLT) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NLT)
4. SALVATION is by GRACE through FAITH in JESUS: God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT)
5. Accept Jesus and receive eternal life: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9 NLT) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12 NLT) And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 NLT)
Read the Bible for yourself. Allow the Lord to speak to you through his Word. YOUR ETERNITY IS AT STAKE!
Rhipicephalus Sanguineus (Brown Dog Tick)
Location - Brisbane Australia
Pictured here is a young Rhipicephalus, or possibly a small adult male... But Im leaning more towards nymph seeing as he was only 2mm (And barely)
I was planning on letting him gorge, and taking progress shots ! But, alas, ticks are slow feeding creatures that can go un-noticed for days or weeks, taking up to 10 days to become fully engorged.
And once noticed, they are quite noticeable !
(Think when you watch a mosquito bite compared to when they sneak one)
Itchiness and a dull pain where the only symptoms i felt, and im not sure how much of it was my own mind's making !
Nevertheless, my experiment plans where thwarted when my partner noticed the little parasite, and quickly and skillfully removed him whilst 'taking a look' !
Vacation aftermath: chigger bites on Xy's back. She had over fifty bites. I had something like 15, mostly on my ankles. Thanks, Indiana!
Update: As of August 2009 this is my most viewed photo. Later that month, this became my first photo to have scored more than 10,000 views.
Update: Since this photo gets so much traffic, I can only assume folks might be interested in the hot water treatment. It works for poison ivy, fire ant stings and — yes chigger bites.
