Had the most awesome day at Claire Carter and Hawkeye Bird of Prey Photography Workshop in Thoresby Park. A privilege to get close to such beautiful birds and I learned such a lot about bird photography that I hope I can put in to practice in future. My photos (just a few here out of 100s I took today) are pale imitations of what is achievable but I'm happy with (some of) my efforts with limited kit.
Small and precise. Most of its prey is taken in flight, as it moves with ease through bare branches and dense thickets.
It feeds mainly on small songbirds, which is why it is often seen during the colder months in gardens where bird feeders attract tits and other small birds. As a result, the sparrowhawk also adapts well to the presence of people.
Walking the sidewalk between the edge of the Corning Preserve fence and the 787 off-ramp heading toward the D & H building. I have shot its 13-story tower previously from a distance, but I wanted to try to capture a photo of the rest of it's Gothic & Dutch-style architecture. I heard a commotion in a pine tree on the other side of the fence, observed blackbirds squawking loudly, flying out the tree and flying back into it at high velocity. Looking into the tree I could only make out the tail feathers of a large bird of prey, moving a few feet closer I spied a hawk eye staring at me through the branches higher up. The BoP wasn't moving so I went ahead to grab my building photos and checked again on the way back.
Back 30 minutes later it took me a bit to spot her at 1st, but she was now in an opening up the tree. She didn't seem to be too bothered with me taking photos of her under 40 feet away. In the full-res photo is blood evidence of her last meal all around her beak and feathers. After 20 minutes the hawk had enough of the birds annoying her and flew off.
It is always an awesome experience being so close to these big hunters whether it be an eagle, hawk or owl.
