I watched this barn owl catch 5 voles but then it went straight into the sun to take it back to the young

Going through some old images and came across this previously unedited photo of a male Kestrel taken a few years ago...

went looking for hares but found these nice red kites

Poplar Beach, Half Moon Bay CA.

A colorful medium sized raptor found pretty much everywhere along the coasts across the country - though in varying frequency. This is an immature male I think based on the plumage. There were about 4-5 of them, all of them sitting on perches like this around 10 feet from each other in a lagoon on the Godavari river.

These - there were 3 of them - kites were just resting after continuously harassing the small waders for a while. They found this broken stump on the banks and perched on them. The wind was strong and they had some challenge balancing on them. But then, an army of House Crows which were feeding on the crustaceans left over on the sandbar during the low tide didn't like the presence of these kites. So they continually mobbed them. 4-5 crows together mobbed each Brahminy kite at a time and in a span of 15-20 mins all of 4 of the kites flew away.

The Kites briefly fought back, but it was each Kite for himself - the other kites didn't budge when their friend was mobbed. The crows though joined hands and fought the Kite - the groupism was so stark!

A Barn Owl that flew across my path (thankfully) and proceeded to hunt around me allowing some opportunity for pictures

Birds of Prey Center, SC

Mid-winter of 2017 there was a snowy owl that wintered on a farm in Bradford County, PA, about an hour drive from my home. I'd already been down once or twice. One evening, about two hours before sunset, I drove down again, parking on the road near the farm where it had been seen. The snowy was maybe 200+ yards out. I busied myself with pulling out my 2x teleconverter with my 500mm lens and then slung it back out the window. Then I saw it, this short-eared owl had caught a vole and was eating it only about 30 yards from my jeep. Pretty remarkable, especially considering this was the very first short-eared owl I had ever seen! That was a very busy time for me as I was preparing for a trip to Africa and I had made only one copy of the images. Shortly after returning from Africa, the drive with images from my SEO encounter became corrupted. The drive wasn't recognized by any PC that I tried. I set it aside, occasionally pulling it out to ensure that, no, I was right, it couldn't be seen. Then last Monday, 3.5 years later, I had a memory card issue after another amazing photo op resulting in complete wipe of another amazing encounter. I purchased restoration software and magically, I was able to restore Monday's images! This weekend I thought about this device from 2017 containing the SEO images. I plugged it in, pulled up the software, and there it was. Every single image from that incredible SEO shoot was there! Three years later, my error that resulted in nearly losing photos last Monday not only restored those photos, but also so many images and memories that I had lost from three years before. Serendipity reigns supreme! Oh, and never give up and NEVER EVER throw away a memory card. A blog is forthcoming. January 2017

Birds of Prey at the 2019 Scottish Games in Pleasanton

The littlest owlet is left alone and looking out from the nest after the older one fledged. Mom now has two babies to keep an eye on in different locations.

A migratory raptor from Central Asia, Eastern Europe that winters in India. They are quite similar to the Pallid Harriers and both these birds are often seen together and even hunt in the same habitat - grasslands. The prey base is also quite similar.

I visited the grasslands to shoot them in the morning fog and the golden light. But disappointingly, there were only 2 of these around - unlike couple of weeks ago when I saw more than a dozen of them hunting around. The Pallid Harrier in the picture - an immature or first winter in my view - flew to this tree and started preening itself much to our delight. We found a good angle that gave us this nice shot!

Thanks in advance for your views and feedback. Much appreciated.

just popped out when the rain stopped very late shot of the kestrel

This Short-eared Owl just seemed to want to pose. It was very relaxed, enjoying the beautiful day just like I was. One of those magical days when the weather, nature and good people relish the moments.
