Birds of Paradise flower, also known as Strelitzia. If there is only one flower, does it become a "Bird of Paradise"? I don't know if that is a botanical or grammatical question.
Test shot with Nikon D4 + Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 135mm f/2D. The primary goal was to test the sharpness of the older 130/2 lens with the 16MP sensor in the D4.
At a distance of 1m, the DoF with this lens at f/2 is only 5.7mm, much less than even some of the famous shallow DoF lenses such as the Nikkor 85/1.4G, Nikkor NOCT 58/1.2, or even Leica Noctilux 50/0.95. At a distance of 3m (~10 feet), the DoF increases to 5.7cm or 2.25 inches.
So it is easy to see large areas of the image apparently OOF, but the reality is, sharpness is highly contained to the area of focus, unless the lens is stopped down.
For anyone interested in the image quality from this camera/lens, I have uploaded the full 16.2MP high-res version of the image at 90% JPEG quality.

The Triad headed to Palm Springs this afternoon to have a hot dog at the Atomic Dog. Darek & I had a piece of chocolate pie too.
Later in the afternoon went to The Lodge to play some pool.
We followed our pool games with a dip in the swimming pool.
Not long ago I did two things. I read an article in Frankie on internet dating, in which the author* lamented the phenomenon of men wanting to meet women with "no baggage", among other things. I also watched a documentary narrated by David Attenborough which showed the incredible courtship rituals of the birds of paradise of New Guinea. As I watched the male birds preen and fail to win over the female every time, it reminded me of those men that the Frankie writer described, and it made sense to combine the two.
* I don't have a copy of issue 41 so I can't cite the author unfortunately.

The yellow-eyed pigeon or pale-backed pigeon (Columba eversmanni) is a member of the family Columbidae (doves and pigeons). It breeds in southern Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, north-east Iran and extreme north-west China. It winters in north-east Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Rajasthan (including Tal Chhapar Sanctuary and Jorbeer, Bikaner). The bird has declined in numbers over the years, chiefly because of hunting, and it is listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Birds of paradise and California golden poppies are depicted on utility boxes in Ocean Beach (San Diego).
Another attempt to capture the beauty and ruggedness of Bird of Paradise. Some have suggested I only photograph those without the dead leaves but the younger flowers aren't as interesting to me.
Astrapia mayeri, Kumul Lodge feeders. The tail is 3-4 feet long and whooshes up and down as he flies.
Epimachus meyeri, Kumul Lodge feeders, Mt. Hagen, Papua New Guinea. We hoped we would eventually see the male. We didn't.
