BIL has filled up. It's a free event, but Fire Marshals have a small sense of humour when it comes to building capacity.
Not that BIL is afraid of pushing boundaries... last year the capacity was 150 and we had almost 300. But it was tight, and I was super stressing hardcore that the facility managers would kick us out. This year planning is a bit more organized.
We've got 450 people registered this year, with about 50 speakers. Also we're allowing CSULB students come without registering, and I expect a few hundred of those.
Want to come?? There is hope!
There are more rooms we can rent, but only if sponsor dollars come in. It costs about $20 per person in overhead, so as we get more funds we'll let people in on a first-come-first-served basis. However, if you donate more than $100 you can have a priority registration.
It was with a heavy heart we created a class division... BIL strives for an egalitarian system where everyone has equal access to ideas.
Is allowing priority registration ideal? No.
How can I defend this? Well, to start off I rent the facility out-of-pocket, recouped later as donations come in. If less donations come in than the cost of throwing the conference I am out that money. That's $9,000, and the limits of the financial risk I'm willing to expose myself to.
It was completely free for the first 450 people, which I think is reasonable. It is also free for people signing up if more sponsorship comes through for more rooms.

Someone asked me what kind of people came to BIL, so I baked up some pie charts from our registration information.
I like how no particular industry dominates... Tech (represented by Software and Computers/Electronic) is clearly the highest, but Education and Entertainment and others are also well represented.
Oh, by the way, BIL is full, but we can grow as we get more sponsors. bilconference.com/sponsors/
