Where there is a will there is a way.
In some places, simple curb blocks placed end on end are the separation from the motorized-vehicle lanes and the bicycle lanes. Unlike the 2' wide curbs, these are fast and relatively inexpensive to create - and set aside the ROW for bikes.
They appear to use the space that was set out for curbside car-parking (note the white painted parking space designation).

I thought the design of these repositories for trash, recycling, and compost reflected how UCSF is treating the environment better. How many food courts do you know educate guests about composting?

New York has been very public in celebrating it's adoption of painted bicycle lanes in Manhattan - however I think that in North America, Montreal deserves some special attention for it's bold move to create separated, bi-directional, bicycle lanes right through the downtown area. The network is still relatively new, a bit sparse, but still being constructed and intensified.
As of December 2009, the closest thing that I have seen to this in the Americas are some of the Ciclorutas in downtown Bogota www.flickr.com/photos/83423898@N00/3139669132/in/photostream . Otherwise I feel the concept is much more European, - such as seen in Seville Spain www.flickr.com/photos/adrimcm/5786731273/in/set-721576267...:
A resident friend of mine (normally a driver) commented to me that an increase to respect/watch out for/accept cyclists by drivers had been tangible over the last few years - something she was still surprised by even though she was one of those who found herself being more aware of cyclists.
