Bogota has alot of bike lanes, 344kms of off-road and separated bike paths.

The downtown/centre-ville/centro ones are totally different: farm4.static.flickr.com/3121/3139669132_16a1daffb5_z.jpg

The entire network is separated from cars in some way. They often run down the grassy centre boulevard of major roads, on the road but separated from cars by a 2-foot-wide curb, or on part of the superwide sidewalks. This one is a adjacent to a major arterial - it has a very different character to the downtown or built up areas. The downtown bike paths in Bogota are similar to the ones in Montreal (but I believe Bogota's have been around longer).

Back home, I have noticed locally that the demographic (and numbers) of cyclists that uses painted lanes on city streets is very different from the small army of cyclists that use our commuter bike path, and I am jealous of Bogota's insight into personal safety.

My hometown prides itself on a wildly popular commuter bike path, but I have to say that this example of Bogota bike path network makes our (one) beloved path look like a very lonely cousin.

New York has been very public in celebrating it's adoption of painted bicycle lanes in Manhattan - however I think that in North America, Montreal deserves some special attention for it's bold move to create separated, bi-directional, bicycle lanes right through the downtown area. Installation began years ago (well before New York and well before Vancuver). The network is still a bit sparse, but still being constructed and intensified.

As of December 2009, the closest thing that I have seen to this in the Americas are some of the Ciclorutas in downtown Bogota www.flickr.com/photos/83423898@N00/3139669132/in/photostream . Otherwise I feel the concept is much more European, - such as seen in Seville Spain www.flickr.com/photos/adrimcm/5786731273/in/set-721576267...:

A resident friend of mine (normally a driver) commented to me that an increase to respect/watch out for/accept cyclists by drivers had been tangible over the last few years - something she was still surprised by even though she was one of those who found herself being more aware of cyclists.

Bike commuting can be an inexpensive and efficient way to work physical activity into our lives - imho in a more logical way than the evening or after-work gym schedule.

While New York has been very vocal in it's adoption of painted & paint-buffered bicycle lanes, Montreal has quietly been taking the bicycle revolution a step further by re-allocating lane and parking space to permanent, physically buffered bi-directional bike lanes. The growing network includes downtown streets.

Drivers have had some difficulty adapting to the changes (ie looking for cyclists, not just pedestrians when turning), a Montrealer friend of mine says that the driving culture is shifting to a high increase in awareness of cyclists.

Enabling cycling makes it a lower hanging fruit for all - including for those who may already have a car parked in the driveway.
