Powerful and fast-flying, the Peregrine Falcon hunts medium-sized birds, dropping down on them from high above in a spectacular stoop. They often sit on high perches, waiting for the right opportunity to make their aerial assault. Look for Peregrine Falcons perching or nesting on skyscrapers, water towers, cliffs, power pylons, and other tall structures. But this one perched on a log at eye level!

Q: How do you organize your music collection for scalability?

I need to free up space on my hard drive, which means I will be burning a number of CDs. I stripped my caselogics and laid out my cd's alphabetically. I also separated the genres of jazz, classical, and world. Before I put these CDs (many of which are stacked) back into their cases, I'd like to know how best to address the scalability issue of caselogics.

Should I leave four or five empty slots at the end of each letter?

And what about genre? Should I create an R&B genre? Does Reggae go into World?

What are, in your opinion, the best practices for organizing your music collection?

BMP Cotton signage in cotton country, Australia (signage captured in 2010)

The growing of cotton, a water-hungry crop, in Australia, the driest inhabited continent in the world, is and has been an issue for many on the land, especially those downstream of the cotton-related water-capture systems, many of which are open channels filled with water evaporating under the sun.

From the industry's side, 'BMP' stands for "Best Management Practices": "BMP is the Australian cotton industry's guide for growing cotton in harmony with our natural environment. BMP is your guarantee of environmental and ethical ..." More here: www.bmpcotton.com.au/

1. Asynchronous collaboration. Participants don't have to be logged on to the course simultaneously; they work in an asynchronous environment in which text-based, threaded discussion and collaborative problem solving form the core learning strategy.

2. Explicit schedules. Instructors of online courses that rely on collaborative discussions schedule lessons within a specific timeframe so participants can share similar experiences and insights.

3. Expert facilitation. Online courses are led by a qualified person specifically trained in online facilitation.

4. Inquiry pedagogy. Designers create effective online courses -- with many specific elements that contribute to sound pedagogy for inquiry learning.

5. Community building. Course designers and instructors are proactive in designing and nurturing a community culture in which participants are supportive, honest, and willing to take intellectual risks.

6. Limited enrollment. There are between 12 and 25 participants in a class to keep collaborative learning manageable.

7. High-quality materials. Course designers include the widest feasible range of media and activities to appeal to different styles of learning.

8. Purposeful virtual spaces. Online, course designers create explicit structures so the community gets what it needs without interrupting the flow of content-based discussions. Typically included are a "Student Lounge," a "Questions about Assignments," a "Technical Questions," and a "Class Meeting" discussion space for debriefing course experiences.

9. Ongoing assessment. Online assessment is a continuous, ongoing process. Instructors find evidence of achievement in participants' daily contributions to online discussions. They learn each student's unique voice and approach to solving problems through their postings.

San Francisco area has not been raining as hard as this morning for a long time. I took day off and went to Half Moon Bay this morning in order to take a shot of this rare bird.

It's still raining hard when we arrived there, so we decided to have our lunch at Sam's Chowder House. It turned out a sunny day afer lunch. We're lucky to have the opportunity to take couple shots of this beautiful bird (it's still wet).

Last Thursday, March 15, I had some full body scans for my health care catastrophe.

This was hella painful (they put radiation in your body for teh bone one) && exhausting.

Later in the day I built an expressive Max patch - this thing running behind the text box - to express my ‘ numb + static ‘ feels and get them out of my system ... because pain / numb / static body feels can go where we choose it to go, if we abide with it and then choose to turn it into something else.

Mine went into this Max patch. Then I thought maybe other folks might want to build it, so I made this patch demo.

p.s. the ingrained patching habits demo'd here supported me creating this patch in about an hour despite being in a really painful headspace, and despite being literally radioactive

New York has been very public in celebrating it's adoption of painted bicycle lanes in Manhattan - however I think that in North America, Montreal deserves some special attention for it's pioneering bold move to create curb- separated (very permanent), bi-directional, bicycle lanes right through the downtown area. Montreal has been quietly installing these lanes in their downtown for a number of years - well before lanes in Manhattan, or planters on Vancouver streets.

A resident friend of mine (normally a driver) commented to me that an increase to respect/watch out for/accept cyclists by drivers had been tangible over the last few years - something she was still surprised by even though she was one of those who found herself being more aware of cyclists.

As of December 2009, the closest thing that I have seen to this in the Americas are some of the Ciclorutas in downtown Bogota www.flickr.com/photos/83423898@N00/3139669132/in/photostream . Enabling cycling makes it a lower hanging fruit for all - including for those who may already have a car parked in the driveway. Bike commuting can be an inexpensive and efficient way to work physical activity into our increasingly sedentary lives - imho in a more logical way than the evening or after-work gym schedule.

Agile Information Management

Agile development models include just in time information gathering processes. Agile information gathering processes include rapid collection of content and the clear appearance of the resulting documents. Collecting technical business requirements and immediately folding them into the client template is an agile information management method.

Business Analyst Teams need to capture requirements as they are clarified. This is especially important when:

1. The deliverable is the requirement document first and foremost

2. The outline for documenting incoming requirements already exists

3. Tight deadlines exists and there is any risk of delays in documentation, or in overlapping out-of-date information being presented to the client–

4. Or if the document control tool, which is commonly used for working together interactively, is flakey and as a result document versions may become dated

It is not an agile process to wait to add known requirements. For example having project management, or development directing a business analyst to wait until later to add or modify incoming requirements prior to a document presentation. It makes sense to put the correct and current requirements into the current document. It is more logical to keep found things found by categorizing them immediately.

1. It is a waste of time and money, searching when editing the same document repeatedly, or by different individuals, when the requirement should be added on the fly

2. It is frustrating for the BA, it is frustrating for the client when they read out of date requirements

3. It creates unnecessary control issues

4. It runs counter to the clients’ actual needs and requests

5. It isn’t agile any more, it is an outdated technique

Presentation of business requirements is 50% of the job of development consulting, that is, what a document actually looks like really matters to governance and business people

1. Because they spend all their time in documents, generally they want them to look familiar and be formatted correctly, so it makes sense to use their templates

2. They care about documentation, and that is your value to them

3. Your clients will never have your depth of knowledge regarding technology, which means you will have to explain your processes and reasons if you do it any other way (slowing the process down) besides using their processes and procedures

4. The business and governance or project management office people will participate in decision making about actually building the project, or not, and you want them to want to work with you, by showing that you will work with them!

There is a great interior Station shot here: www.flickr.com/photos/doctorlo/2275173783/ (I think it captures the look and feel of the stations very well).

Here are links to some short videos showing how the stations work:

Go to 0:52 on this one (actually a different system, but identical station style)

It was raining by the time we arrived back in town on the Transmilenio. You can see the turnstiles entering the station here. Even though Bogota has a very mild climate, it rains enough that the enclosed stations are very very nice feature to have. The station is in the centre of the road forming the long part of the "T" with the crosswalk, it is in the median and serves both directions of travel. The ramps are graded so that wheelchairs can use them and drivers are trained (no guidance system) too keep the gap very tight - it is usually less than three inches enabling strollers and wheelchairs to roll straight in on the first set of doors (there are three sets of doors).

Any transit user appreciates a good shelter, and these stations are exemplary in that they not only offer excellent weather protection and shelter, but work to make the transit experience faster by assisting in easy, universally-accesible and fast boarding. For TransMilenio, they create the permanence so often lacking in North American BRT, while in a rail situation, this style of station would send strong signals about concern for rider comfort.

I think it is the architecture, but in this photo Ave Jimenez has a very European feel to it. At some point, I imagine when TransMilenio went in, the upper portion of the street was turned exclusively into a pedestrian and transit mall. The road is beautifully bricked.

If you are interested in reading more about Transmilenio (which is a truly inspiring system), click "TransMilenio" under tags to see my other photos of it.

Colombia has built and is building numerous other BRTs

Pereira (Megabus) - An existing system: much smaller-scaled, which has split the directions of travel onto separate streets - the approach to a station is at the end of the video.

Colombian BRT systems have high-doors that line up with station platforms. They stay on the BRT lanes only and do not travel in mixed traffic.. Passengers transfer to smaller local traffic buses that do go in mixed traffic.

I had a very low opinion of BRT until running into TransMilenio.. but upon seeing this, my opinion did a 180, and I see that with similar quality such a system would be a great addition to a lot of regions. I am particularly struck by the role that the stations play in service and presence.

Ever heard of Bus Rapid Transit? Well you haven't seen a good one until you've seen something like Bogota's TransMilenio. I had a pretty low opinion of the concept, but experiencing this made me do a 180... but is has to be done right.

One of my favourite features of the TransMilenio, that I do not have photos of are its inetgration with cycling. This occurs out in residential branches of the stations. cyclysists have a separate gate, they enter it with the their smart card (paying fare), park and lock their bikes and then have access to the BRT platform (having already paid). The bike parking is attached to the terminal or station, it is secure and included in the price of payment for the BRT.
