A series of images about how I build up a groupshot outdoors at night, combining flash with a long shutterspeed to get enough ambient light in.
Postprocessed version of 'groupshot 7': just some burning, dodging and softening some shadows on the faces.

2007 april, Zaventem (Belgium), Summer in Spring
This year we had an unusual hot april without any rain in Belgium. We should all worry about global warming but at least the kids enjoyed this early summer.

Last Saturday my wife was out with her friends and my parents kidnapped my kids, so I unexpectedly ended up home alone. Since I received some new studio lighting equipment last week, I couldn't resist setting up a quick improvised test shoot. I asked on Twitter if anyone wanted to pose for me and Lut, the wife of a fellow photographer, volunteered. Thanks Lut for being so stunning and patient.
Here the main light is a Hensel Expert Pro 500 monobloc with a beautydish. A Sunbounce micro-mini below and a pro to camera left, are used as fill light. A second Hensel monobloc with reflector and grid was pointed at the floor behind Lut to get some separation.

Just a few pictures from our family holiday. Travelling with 3 small kids can be pretty exhausting so I packed just a minimum of photo gear: my Ixus and a DSLR with one lens (which stayed in the hotel safe for most of the time anyway).

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.
When I recentely borrowed an Ixus in Valencia because my gear was stolen, I realised I had to get a good compact camera myself, so I bought a Canon Ixus. It's far from as powerful as my DSLR's but because it fits in my pocket I can take it with me all the time. Great for some memories I wouldn't have captured otherwise.

First time using my Hasselblad 500 c/m camera for outdoor reportage style photography. My exposures and focus seems to be reasonably good, better than I expected.
This is shot with natural light and the 80mm lens. It was shot on a roll of (very) expired Porta 160VC. The scan isn't very good since I used a very old Epson 1240U flatbed scanner. I just ordered a new scanner so I didn't bother doing any dust removal on these pictures. I'll wait until I can scan them decently. Just a bit of Lightroom on this picture.

I've been telling people for years that there's a market for compact camera's with a fast prime lens and a big sensor. So I've been following the evolutions of the micro 4/3 system. Eventually I decided to buy the Panasonic GF1 with the 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens. So far these first test shots exceed my (already high) expectations. I'm going to have a lot of fun with this camera.

My son Kobe is a real soccer freak. In his first year at a soccer team, it was basically just 10 kids chaotically running for the ball. But now (second year) they really start to play soccer.
It sure is fun to watch them play. I don't bring my camera very often but because last time was so long ago, I took some pictures last Saturday.

I was seriously considering not doing weddings anymore next year, in fact the decision was made. But some amazing weddings this year made me recall that decision. Bart and Marleen are two fantastic people who trusted my vision and skills completely and are amongst some other couples that pushed me to go on.
Next year I'm going to do a limited amount of weddings and I'm going to do it my way. I'll focus on quality instead of quantity. I won't guarantee to capture every little moment any more but I will guarantee that I'll capture the mood of the day in less but better pictures.

Pregnancy is one of those unique times in life and it's always worth having some visual memories of that fantastic time. That's why Sarah and Bart decided to have a photoshoot before the baby was born.
It's pretty difficult to avoid making the typical classis studio shots, but we tried. Sarah and Bart proposed to shoot in the fantastic small village Mullem. We just walked around, had fun and made pictures. Sarah and Bart were great and it was fun to me too.
Soft light, bricks in the background, 50mm lens and a striking woman. It doesn't get much easier than this to make a picture.

Just a snap from the family holiday in France. As a professional photographer it's tempting to lug around all that gear on holiday but I find it important to step away from photography from time to time and just focus on my family. I only took 400 images in two weeks and mostly just with my small digicam (and a waterproof housing).

That 25 EUR plastic Holga camera has a hotshoe so for my second test roll of film I wanted to see if I could trigger my Hensel Expert Pro monolights with it. Seems to work just fine although it might be a bit weird to use top notch Hensel equipment with the extremely low end Holga.

I don't do a lot of typical studio photography and usually white seamless backgrounds are considered as the enemy. So I hesitated to take on this job for fashion designer Griet Verhoeven (www.enolah.be). Having the opportunity to work with my favorite model Erika, made me do it. And I'm glad I did it. It was a valuable lesson about being open to other kinds of photography. Much to my own surprise I enjoyed this shoot a lot. The soft light and white seamless makes you focus on posing much more, because that's the only tool left to tell your story. The extremely professional attitude and fun collaboration with the model, the designer, her assistant/stylist and the photographer was also very enjoyable.

The Belgian association of Professional Photographers organised a lecture/celebration about the life and work of Filip and Ria Santens. It was great to see how they still have this crazy appetite for creating images and we had lots of fun.
We spotted the carefully camouflaged successor of the Nikon D300. One thing we can tell, is that it has a huuuuuuge screen.

2007 may 5, Zaventem (Belgium), School party
Every year this school (Zavo) organises a big party/show starring all the kids and teachers and staff. This year the theme was 'the wrong party', meaning that they used music, costumes etc. that you should like if you want to be in fashion.
I received my "poverty wizards" in the mail today. I was excited so I popped the strip light ala Bert Stephani (http://bertstephani.com/blog) on the SB-600, directed it at my face and fired away. I thought it was an interesting look for me...

I am not a sports photographer at all but I find it fun to shoot one of my son's soccer games from time to time. I really enjoy it although my respect for sports photographers grows every time I attempt taking some good action shots.
TECHNICAL INFO
I used a 1D mkIII with a 70-200 and a 2x extender on a Gitzo monopod. The extender reduces the 70-200 to an f5.6 lens that doesn't always focus fast and accurate enough. The extender also reduces the image quality, certainly in backlit situation. I can't justify getting a 400mm f/4 to shoot for fun but for what I use it, the 70-200 + extender is more than good enough.
Oh yeah, they won 1-22!

Pro model Sylviane read on my Facebook that I was scouting a location near where she lives. By the time I finished scouting we arranged to have a short improvised fun shoot.
I only had a camera + 24-70 + speedlight in my bag. In the trunk of my car, I also found a Sunbounce mini. But not having all my gear with me, couldn't stop us from having a fun 30 minute shoot.
At home, I only spent another 30 minutes postprocessing the shoot in Lightroom
The limited gear forced me to be creative and I actually rediscovered a cool lighting technique.
