Human beings can withstand a week
without water, two weeks without food,
many years of homelessness, but not
loneliness. It is the worst of all tortures,
the worst of all sufferings.
- Paulo Coehlo

The Hooded Merganser:
Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )
Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.
The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

The answer must be, I think, that beauty and grace are performed whether or not we will them or sense them. The least we can do is try to be there.

“Seek out a tree and let it teach you stillness.”
― Eckhart Tolle ―
Wisdom comes with the ability to be still. Just look and just listen. No more is needed. Being still, looking, and listening activates the non-conceptual intelligence within you. Let stillness direct your words and actions.

Being the national bird of Hungary, and capable of flying at speeds approaching 200mph I was delighted when this fabulous looking bird perched briefly to enable a few shots.
Image taken in the Hortobágy region of Hungary.
Many thanks to everyone that views and comments on my images - very much appreciated.

From the top, an impressive plateau, it is possible to contemplate the entire city of Rio and its surroundings – it is possible to see the Sugar Loaf, Christ the Redeemer, the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca, and even the mountains of Serra of the Organs. It's an unforgettable sight!
PS. Me being photographed by one of my guides, Marcelo Kastrup (Adrena Rio).
Have you seen the film Being there with Peter Sellers? Watch it! Simple and profound comedy. It is one of those films that pop up in my mind from time to time. When I tried to do this image in black and white, it immediately took away from the sense of being there. And also, to me, it seems that something extraordinary is about to take place next in this image.

On this beautiful rural road you can be alone for a while. Letting your feelings and thoughts come, letting your worries go. Finally coming home in peace. That is what nature does for me. Purmerland, 2016.
Thank you very much for your visits, faves and kind comments.

While walking in the Dutch dunes we heard a hard kind of running sound. Looking back we saw this powerhouse storming towards us. We had to jump aside I had just enough time for one shot and my wife didn't stop running until the coast was clear.
photos made on an afternoon walk 19 october to stretch the legs and enjoy our own forest, while working on the isle of Terschelling photos. edited 3 november.
Up close and personal with this wonderful tree that seems to be doing its best to ensnare me with its writhing snake like branches. Taken at Brush Hill Nature Reserve, Buckinghamshire, on a very chilly January morning.
One of the greatest joys of travelling along the Lofoten islands besides its absolutely breathtaking nature and topography must be the many many MANY tunnels that links some of them or which lead the E10 through insuperable mountains. It became one of my pleasures to be at the ready with my cameras and shoot while we were inside. Soo much fun, especially since most of the time you are all by yourself, not a single other car at sight and where else does one have that pleasure?! :)
Happy Monochrome Monday!
The church being constructed in 1523 or 1453, the dates differing according to the different opinions of people, was in the valley of Mraconia in a very delighted and beautiful sight, at a very hidden place (Mraconia means a place being hidden). It is known that during the russian-austriac-turkish battle (1787-1792) it was destroyed. In 1823 there was found the ruins along with a slavic proverb being written upon: "Peceat Manastirea Lubostinie Hram Uspenia Presvistaia Bogaraditi Leto 1735."
In 1931 it started the reconstruction of the monastery, however, everything having been reconstructed was stopped in 1967 by the water of the Portile de Fier I. After this the monastery did not get the chance to be reconstructed again. It became the monastery under water, Mraconia. In the year of 1993 the new stone of the new church was put in there, too. From the old monastery however it is still kept the old gate and some other minor parts being exhibited in a museum, Eselnita Iin Romania on the Danube Gorges (DN57 Orșova-Moravița)

This week I have been working on merging photos with flower backgrounds. Instead of using blends I have tried to use masks to remove or fade parts of the photos that I don't wants. I am still trying to find a suitable topic for my final submission.
Take a break and read a bedtime story with ma Dane, he never would confess it but he is enjoying a good story and a warm drink ♥

Being the Spring equinox (well here in the Southern Hemisphere anyway) I thought some florally pastely whimsy might be appropriate. Hit 30C today, yay! Time to start swimming on the beaches instead of just photographing them.
Fun fact about the equinox. As you know it marks the tipping point from days being shorter than nights, to days becoming longer than nights. BUT .., days and nights are equal in length (each 12 h) for the southern hemisphere two or three days before the technical spring equinox and most of Australia sees about 12 h 8 min. of daylight on the spring equinox itself. This is because our atmosphere refracts sunlight so that we can see the Sun just before it's risen in line with the horizon and just after it's passed below the level of the horizon at sunset. Seeing the sun before it rises! Science amazes , and confuses me!
Happy equinox wherever you are in this fascinating world of ours :)
