Apis mellifera stealing nectar from Datura

Hey everyone! Well, sometimes nature leans to behavior that may seem odd or even gross to us...and firstly, I certainly hope that this series of shots doesn't bother you or gross you out...that would never be my intention! This is merely a natural occurrence with pelicans when their lower lip beak pouch is inverted...it was my first time observing this behavior and caught this series of shots...I thought it too unique to ignore...pelicans are amazing...and observers of nature must be prepared to see anything!

I observed this hermit crab trying to make up its mind about which shell to wear. It tried the bigger one on, then the smaller one, then changed back to the bigger one.

Earlier this year I visited this Fremont culture rock art panel in a canyon in Northern Utah, one of very few examples of rock art in the Wasatch Mountains. In the early weeks of October 2025 news broke that the panel had been vandalized by teenage girls. Due to the current state of the Federal Government, there is very little possibility of it being restored.

This is by far the most common lizard here... and the most interesting. The male has an extendable throat fan that is bright orange or yellow. It's a visual signal that he's "the Man." The female has a wide light stripe on the back that has scalloped borders. While not a native species, it is now well established in southern Florida. (It was introduced from the West Indies centuries ago... not necessarily deliberately.)

I hoped the ladybugs on my sungold tomato plant were engaged in some voracious microscopic mite-eating.

On closer examination, however, I realized they were engaged in a completely different sort of behavior.

The Behavioral Operations Management Summer Institute for PhD students at the Ross School of Business of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (BOMSI2019). The lead faculty were Ryan Buell (Harvard Business School), Stephen Leider (Ross School of Business, University of Michigan), and Jordan Tong (Wisconsin School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison). From the website, "The inaugural Behavioral Operations Management Summer Institute for PhD students will be held June 10-14, 2019, at the University of Michigan, Ross School of Business in partnership with the Center for Value Chain Innovation. The conference is co-sponsored by the business schools at the University of Michigan, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Support for this event is also being provided by Harvard Business School's Technology and Operations Management Unit. The 1-week intensive summer institute is designed to provide PhD students who are interested in behavioral research a solid foundation to conduct behavioral operations management research. Additionally, we hope that the summer institute will encourage collaboration and the creation of a research community among the next generation of researchers. Each day of the institute will include morning and afternoon sessions. Morning sessions will provide a general overview of BOM, review core behavioral economics/psychology topics, and discuss OM applications. Afternoon sessions will be focused more on small groups, practicums (e.g., applying ideas to actual research activity), and roundtables (more informal discussions). There will also be free time to prepare for the next day, have office hours, pair up to work on ideas, and hang out!" Pictures from the sessions taken over the week.

While I was watching one snipe in a big puddle alongside the road, another flew in and landed near it. The one originally there raised its orange tail plumage and slowly walked the other one out of its territory, sort of like an escort. It was really cool to see because it wasn't you're regular "Get out!" display. Universal Mine. Vermillion County, IN

The oddly named "No Wave Fest" brought together 11 local bands that had nothing to do with no wave nor one another for a day long treat. Check out my photos and video of the day on Too Much Rock at toomuchrock.com/
