The Begonia House, opened in 1936, was the last large structure to be built in Machattie Park. The first begonia tubers are believed to have been a gift from Ballarat Council. Current plant stock includes descendants of stock from Blackmore and Langdon in Bath, England. The begonias flower between February and May but the best time to view them is in mid-March when they are at their peak.

Begonia is a very large genus of ca. 1500 species of herbs and subshrubs that occur predominantly in the tropical rainforests of both hemispheres. Unfortunately none of the species on display in the Domes were labelled, so I can't provide names. These photos, taken at the Mitchell Domes (and indoor conservatory) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, show four of the species currently on display.

The red begonias are a problem to me. I like them so much, I keep buying and some time later they turn green.

Here we can see how they are still a bit red but new leaves are green.

I like taking macro shots of leaves. I love the colours on this begonia.
