A bicycle ride on the first day of the year
iPhone 13 / traveling light and missing my camera gear but had bigger plans in mind / Caminha, Portugal
A new year, new challenges and one of my new year resolutions is to try out more different kinds of photography. Minimalism fascinates me and I love photographing in shades of white. For this photo I placed a white sheet of cardboard on an outside table and photographed the white egg in hard sunshine so that I would get a strong shadow. The result seemed perfect for representing a new beginning.
This photo was taken on the morning as storm Arwen raged, as I was adjusting my composition tuning the camera on the tripod to vertical I glimpse this wave starting. I quickly took several shots as I tightened my tripod. This first shot was the only one I caught full frame as it soon rose higher and started to exit right, that photo I called "The jaws of Arwen”.

Beginnender Sonnenuntergang
Wer am späten Nachmittag wunderschöne Sonnenuntergänge genießen möchte ist an der türkischen Riviera genau richtig.

Another image from the trip up to the Lakes a couple of weeks ago, the weather had been largely poor but this morning was looking decent on the forecast and early on I opened the curtains to a world of foggy goodness covering the entirity of Windermere.
This was shot looking down the Lake towards Boness from Ambleside with the prominent hill of Latterbarrow at 244m managing to poke its head above the inversion. You can actually just see a little bit of Windermere in the shot with some trees reflected into it.
This was taken about 10 minutes prior to sunrise over the mountains with the sky coloring up but the colour still not quite reaching right across the frame but just warming the trees in the foreground up nicely picking out some Autumn colours. The drop in the temperature was very noticeable in both my hands, and the battery life of the drone!

For my offering for Super Saturated Sunday today I thought I would take an innocuous, unprepossessing photograph (of which I have a vast collection) and quickly turn it into some lurid faux Modern Art that might vaguely emulate the kind you see for sale in galleries for tens of thousands of pounds.
This is a picture of bubbles in the frozen water in a broken mug in my garden taken at the end of December. (For a more normal version of another image taken at the same time see flic.kr/p/2kpGhPy ).
It was developed and processed in Affinity Photo, but the fancy stuff done using Nik Color Efex. The bulk of the effect was due to solarisation combined with a bi-colour filter to create more of a colour gradient across the image, a technique I have used often for this sort of overcooked colour from nothing approach.
A total stack of eight or nine filters was used (it was playtime after all) with some contribution from things like glows and soft focus, selective contrast and graduated ND filter effects. (If you’d like the preset I made from this do ask :) ).
So that was the first twenty minutes dealt with so what should I do with the rest?
Well, I decided to extend the gallery metaphor and make the work look a bit as if it had been hung on a wall. I combined broad frame with directional drop shadow and embossing and then used the Lighting filter to add three spotlights pointing downward as if had been lit from above. I also used the same filter to add a textured, impasto element to the painting and give it some relief.
So there we are. You know where to send those five-figure cheques, don’t you?
