During the Summer Solstice, the sun never fully goes down in Iceland. It sets around 11:30pm-12:00am, and then begins rising around 2:00am or so. This results in either a long, glorious and seamless sunset to sunrise scenario, or a nice gentle and even overcast light for several hours. We planned our trip so that we would be near some of the waterfalls I wanted to photograph on many nights of the trip, which led to me spending many late nights alone at some of the most epic waterfalls while my wife rested back in our room.
This night in particular, was one of the most peaceful nights of my life to date. I opened up the night by being the only person at two absolutely enthralling waterfalls for a full 4 hours (Dettifoss and Selfoss). On my way back (around 4:30-5:00am) -- instead of getting back to our cabin and sleeping, like I should have -- I decided to stop by the Hverir Geothermal Area and take some shots of the sunrise. Once again, I was the only one here, and it felt like I was on another planet. Simply sublime!
From the sign outside the area:
"Námafjall is a high-temperature geothermal area with fumaroles and mud pots. At a depth of 1000m, the temperature is above 200 degrees Celsius. Along with the steam comes fumarole gas, such as hydrogen sulfide which is responsible for the characteristic hot spring smell in these areas. The hot springs produce considerable sulphur deposits. In previous centuries, sulphur was mined in Iceland to produce gun powder."

Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don't give up.
-- Anne Lamott
A tiny ray of hope, a tiny dream is the pillar that holds up the world... To make these dreams a reality is the ultimate goal of life! So try new things , trust your insticts... Never be afraid... And try and try until you succeed....
CP's Nitrin Local starts its slow roll south towards the Quad Cities with one of the former IC&E/IMRL/CP/SOO GP9s that Canadian Pacific recently reactivated.
You don't see many unrebuilt GP9s leading trains on a Class One railroad much these days. A former Soo Line GP38-2 rounds out the consist.

Just went out on my lunch and thought I would try to get a shot of something. Not much but at least I was able to get out.
The Point Iroquois Light Station rests on a bluff above Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and stands watch where the lake begins its treacherous rush into the St. Mary's River. The Ojibwa Indians massacred a group of invading Iroquois warriors at this location in 1662, giving the point its name. It was noted by the early explorers, but did not become significant until the St. Mary's Falls Ship Canal opened in 1855. The Point Iroquois Light was first illuminated in 1857 and its Fourth Order Fresnel lens shone over one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world: the entrance to the St. Mary's River and the Soo Locks. Point Iroquois became busier with each passing year, and the personnel and facilities required to run the station grew accordingly. In 1870 the house and tower were completely rebuilt, and in 1902, a two-story rectangular brick house was added to the residence to provide housing for the assistant keeper at a total cost of $18,000. There was a group of children at the station and the government sponsored a school at the point. The children of local fishermen attended school here, so the point became a meeting place for local residents. For over 100 years the Point Iroquois Light performed its duties, but in 1962 its light was extinguished in favor of a beacon farther out in the water. Today, the lighthouse and 65 foot tower have been renovated thanks to the cooperative efforts of the Bay Mills/Brimley Historical Research Society and the National Forest Service. Much of the station has been converted into an excellent maritime museum and it has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A cool way to view mine or anyone else's photostream is on fluidr.

Brown's Park, originally called Brown's Hole, is an isolated mountain valley along the Green River in Moffat County, Colorado and Daggett County, Utah in the United States. The valley begins in far eastern Utah, approximately 25 miles (40 km) downstream from Flaming Gorge Dam, and follows the river downstream into Colorado, ending at the Gates of Lodore in Dinosaur National Monument. Known as a haven for outlaws such as Butch Cassidy and Tom Horn during the late 19th century, it is now the location of the Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge. It was also the birthplace of Ann Bassett. She and her sister Josie Bassett, were considered female outlaws and girlfriends to several of Cassidy's Wild Bunch gang.
In the early 19th century, when the Euro-Americans first entered the area, the area was inhabited by Comanche, Shoshoni, and Ute tribal groups. Blackfoot, Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Navaho tribes also visited or used the area. The use of the area by Native Americans was documented by the 1776 Dominguez-Escalante Expedition and by the 1805 Lewis and Clark Expedition. In the 1830s the valley became a favorite location for fur trappers and settlers. In 1837 Fort Davy Crockett was constructed as a trading post and as defense against attacks by the Blackfoot. The fort was abandoned in the 1840s and the population of settlers declined. After the discovery of gold in California in 1848, the valley emerged among ranchers as a favorite wintering ground for cattle. By the 1860s it had acquired a reputation as haven for cattle rustlers, horse thieves, and outlaws, alongside Hole-in-the-Wall, Wyoming and Robbers Roost in Utah. During its outlaw heyday, the Browns Park ethic allowed for most "outlaw deeds" except murder. Butch Cassidy reportedly acquired his nickname while working for a local rancher, and returned to the region repeatedly during his outlaw career.
In 1965 the valley became part of the Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge, designated as a habitat for migratory waterfowl. The refuge contains the remains of several historic sites, including "Two Bar Ranch" headquarters; Fort Davy Crockett; Lodore Hall (which still serves as a community center); and several old abandoned cabins and homesteader settlements.
