In about two hours we'll embark on a 25 hour journey to our next overseas adventure and our new home (for at least the next three years). It's never easy leaving to go back overseas after being home but it is the life we lead and it's not without its perks.

I'm not sure when I'll be online again but I do know that the next time you hear from me I'll be 6700 miles from where I'm sitting right now. Wish me luck.

Even through it was dreadfully hot the first signs of fall sparrow migration were apparent. So excited to see a number of sparrows today! Hopefully the weather will turn and they will start to move in good numbers :)

Made some black leggings for Abbey to wear underneath her sweater dress. Thought it would go well with her color scheme, and to make her look less skimpy

Share with me the highlights of your day

and if you choose not to say much

I will listen anyway.

She is taking her time deciding what to eat. Juncos are great at cleaning up under the feeders. A very uncommon subspecies of Junco I've seen in my yard twice before over the years.

Sadly, this is one of the few photographs I’ve made this summer. It’s an image of my field crew taken up along the Moose River, and they have been busy. You see, I manage conservation lands in Maine, which means that I get to spend time with some incredibly inspirational individuals. Self-motivated, team oriented, smart, thoughtful, inquisitive, dedicated to task-at-hand, and environmentally conscious… These people represent the best of young America, a cross-section spanning the country, and it’s my pleasure to cheer them on.

They’ve been focusing their boundless energy on rebuilding an old Fire Warden’s trail, leading to the summit of No. 5 Mountain. The three mile pathway dates back to the 1930’s. Few switchbacks or erosion control measures, so over the past 80 years it has significantly degraded. But the crew has been rebuilding and rerouting. Diverting water with rock and wood… Turnpikes, waterbars, bog bridging, optimizing trail grade, French drains, bench cuts, stone staircases… The end goal is protecting the resource while ensuring visitor connection to the outdoors, and I’m positive that they’ve met their mark.

I’m so lucky to have had this time with them. A humbling experience... And as the shirts say, Conservation Begins Here. Yes, our shared natural heritage is in good hands. So, who wants to go for a hike?

Situated on the busy border roundabout between Lifford (Donegal) and Strabane – this is an area that was very militarised during the troubles with a giant army base and border checkpoint. The sculptures were a cross-border millennium project. The busiest Asda in NI is right next to this benefitting from cross border trade.

The work consists of five stainless steel and bronze figures each 5.5 meters high.

In the words of the artist, Maurice Harron:

“ Two dancers stand still, poised and ready to begin. At the Lifford side stands a musician holding a fiddle and at the Strabane side a musician with a fife. A drummer stands proudly between them linking the musical ensemble.”

There’s nothing quite so beautiful

As a Bolsa Chica sunset

The colors so extraordinary

As any you could ever get

Especially the blue shades

So exceptional they are

Amazing swashes of color

As bright as a brilliant star

Somehow they give me solace

To see the dark blue tones

Emptiness just goes away

Even when I feel alone

I can’t think of anything

That gives me more delight

Than our Bolsa Chica sunsets

That begin the darkened night

They show themselves brilliantly

The colors deep and true

I’ll forever enjoy our sunsets

Especially the blue!
