Now the Great Bear and Pleiades where earth moves

Are drawing up the clouds of human grief,

Breathing solemnity in the deep night.

Who can decipher, in storm or starlight,

The written character of a friendly fate,

As the sky turns, the world for us to change?

But if the horoscope' s bewildering

Like a flashing turmoil of a shoal of herring,

Who can turn skies back and begin again?

- Montagu Slater, libretto to Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes, 1945

The aria sung by John Vickers on youtube.

This season's revival of David Alden's production of Britten's Peter Grimes at English National Opera was the best production of it that I have ever seen. In fact, I loved it so much I saw it twice. Stuart Skelton is a brilliant Grimes. More here.

Let us now begin to listen to each other. We don't agree on everything but one thing I believe - we are ALL Americans. Nov. 2020.

When someone tells me they're a better builder than me I drop this.

Concentric concrete circles with a crack. Now there’s a story! You’ll probably guess this was not a planned shot. I was quite disappointed ( read furious) to receive this during the week. It had been carefully chosen but not carefully transported. Not only that but the driver left some deep groves in my front lawn! I took the picture to inform the supplier. To my amazement, they wanted it back with them in order to refund. Fortunately they paid for the return which I’m grateful for but it leaves me wondering. Why? The nice lady at the post office had some unexpected weight lifting that day as did we.

Anyway only when I was reviewing my photos for submission did I see an opportunity had arisen. The nesting robins will have to make do with the pond as a water source.

I had taken a number of photos in black and white and was going to do a comparison of original bw versus converted but haven’t achieved that. In this one I have converted to black and white for this challenge.

Jumped out of my warm cosy car-ran to edge of prom-snapped this-jumped back in warm cosy car and cleaned the salty spray off my camera before driving down to Worthing on way home to get camera salty again-will I never learn lol

Day begins at the Mamallapuram Seashore.

I've started to ballast and lay permanent track down on my Swanage Station layout. The straight sections are a doddle but the curves and points are proving troublesome but though it's taken me nearly 2hrs to ballast one points turnout it's worth it as I'm learning new techniques on how to allow the sleepers to still be attached when the track is diagonal to the base studs.

I've not bought any of Trixbrix pre-molded ballasting sections as cost would just be astronomical. Instead I'm using cheap Chinese dark grey individual brick parts and so far all is fitting fine.

This is going to be a VERY slow process but will hopefully prove well worth it when I finally get to start on the buildings (original buildings I made are scraped as new will be more accurate to real world ones) and foliage.

For those who missed Brick Rodeo and BrickFair Virginia, here is a quick video showing the lighting effects that won "Best Lighted MOC" at both shows! 😉

One of the times when I was pleased that we didn't research in advance as that would have spoilt the fun.

We nearly walked pass without seeing - can't recall who spotted.

It was quite a way from the other sculptures but I suspect it is also by Deodato Santos.

Found a shot from Barrie Reynolds which has confirmed this - the sculpture is called Woodland Folk - and I thought they were meant to be witches...maybe they are?

Sorry to crank up the misery even further but the industrial slaughter of our beautiful, blameless badgers begins again tonight, mothers and cubs snuffling up peanuts planted by the killers will be shot in their hundreds ( up to 2000 badgers ) in the coming months. That's not to mention the hundreds of badgers that will inevitably be killed illegally, the ' government ' know damn well they've given the green light for anyone to kill badgers.

I feel like a total hypocrite saying this given that I won't be there but the organisations trying to monitor and disrupt these appalling crimes are desperate for people to help. They need as many people as possible in the killing fields of Gloucestershire and Somerset, heroic souls will be flocking from all over the country to try and save our beautiful badgers. Even if you can't be there just making a small donation will help, those on the ground need night vision equipment in order to see what's going on and of course people travelling large distances to be there are going to end up spending money on fuel. There are camps set up with decent facilities I believe with a very friendly atmosphere by all accounts, these brave people out there in the darkness are all our badgers have now I'm afraid.

Bonnie & Clyde have chosen a nesting site on Smithy Pool. I am not sure they have picked a good position as the nest is quite close to the bank and very vulnerable to predators. Fingers crossed for the Dunham Two

I spent the last week in Mallorca, I brought some interesting pictures back!

Let's begin with that Cinquencento with one of the two codes of the island (PM and IB). PM was the first code used, till 1997 when it was replaced by the code IB.

This year, I was asked to participate in a new creative project with a group of women who I am honored to call friends. These are women who I respect so much, both as artists, and as strong, independent women.

The crux of the project is the monthly passing around of four journals, in which we will all be writing, drawing, painting, pasting, and really including anything that is inspiring us at the moment. The whole concept of the project excites me.

For the past couple of weeks, we've been brainstorming about the project, making decisions as to our process, how we will memorialize it all, even the exact journals which we will be using. The anticipation is at a raging high. However, now that we all have our journals in hand, a new problem has presented itself. Everyone seems timid to begin. Afraid that she will somehow make a mistake, mess up her journal, or do the project "wrong." I find it amusing that with such creative powerhouses, all of us can suffer from such trepidation over screwing up an activity that, let's face it, even little girls do effortlessly.

I broke ground on my own journal yesterday. I decided to follow the advice I had passed along to one of the others, who had texted me to express her anxiety over starting, and I started simply. Knowing that anything I do in this journal will be authentically me. Which is exactly what the project is about. So I thought I would share that simple beginning with my friends. To remind them that even the smallest, simplest start is, in the end, still a true beginning of the project.

And I will end with one of my new favorite quotes... "There is no need to sharpen my pencils anymore. My pencils are sharp enough. Even the dull ones will make a mark."

Begin anywhere, ladies.

For anyone who would like to follow along with our project, I'm sure some of us will be posting here on flickr, but we will also be blogging the experience at The Four Corners Project. Since we've only just begun, there isn't much on the blog as yet. But check back in another month or so and we should be up and running.

For the first time in a few months, I had the chance to get out trackside. With blue skies and a fresh coating of snow, all I needed was a train. As luck would have it, I got word that the exec 70MAC with a BN nose logo was departing Denver to head south on the Joint Line. My morning was set! Acequia, CO 1/10/25.
