It's only spring inside today with our forecast saying possible flurries or snow showers! May tulips from last spring on a bright sunny day!

It's a "Happy Flower" which tells me spring has truly arrived! :)

Sunset Light Begins. © Copyright 2020 G Dan Mitchell - all rights reserved.

First dusk color comes to the sky above Death Valley and the snow-capped Panamint Mountains.

Like most photographers, I'm typically attracted to the most intensely colorful phases of sunset light. I confess! Those colors are hard to resist, and frankly I don't know of any good reason to not photograph them. (The “problem” perhaps occurs when one thinks that is the only light that is good enough to photograph.) As a matter of fact, not too long ago I shared another photograph from this spot, made at close to the same time on this evening, that does focus on a wildly colorful sky, captured at its peak of intensity.

This photograph is perhaps more subtle, photographed when the light was lovely but not so intensively colorful. Anyone who has observed such a sunset recognizes that it in a constant state of development and change. Late afternoon light almost imperceptibly fades into early evening light, and eventually the sky's colors begin to intensify. At the most transient moment many elements are in play — the east becomes more blue, the sky in the far west seems "warmer" and more intense by contrast, and the whole thing parades across the sky from horizon to horizon. Here the fact that the gaudy colors are suppressed seems to allow us to see more clearly the beauty of the gentler blue light.

Trying out Ansel. Not sure if I like it, sense ReShade wont take shots.

Happy Summer to all flickr friends!

As of today, I begin to re–upload a selection of photographs taken between September 2017 and the end of 2018. That was the period during which I rekindled my interest in studio photography, mainly tabletop and macro, and most of them lit by studio flashes, so there will be some of those shots, in addition to my usual standards of landscapes, architecture and old stones, most of those taken during specific trips or while on vacation.

I hope you will enjoy them.

To try and keep up with some of my current work, I will also upload some recent photos. As always the captions will explain it all!

In October 2018, as I was enjoying a couple of months of pre–retirement furlough, I went for a week to Normandy, and more specifically the Pays de Caux (Upper Normandy).

This is a selection of the photographs I took during that trip. As usual, detailed captions will appear below whenever needed.

The manor of Archelles is a lovely 16th century manor where I stayed for most of my week in Normandy, as it was well located with respect to the places I wanted to visit.

Its charming architecture was also a pleasure to photograph in the golden light.

Took a deep breath in the mirror

He didn't like it when I wore high heels

But I do

Turn the lock and put my headphones on

He always said he didn't get this song

But I do, I do

Walked in expecting you'd be late

But you got here early and you stand and wave

I walk to you

You pull my chair out and help me in

And you don't know how nice that is

But I do

And you throw your head back laughing like a little kid

I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did

I've been spending the last eight months

Thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end

But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again

You said you never met one girl

Who had as many James Taylor records as you

But I do

We tell stories and you don't know why

I'm coming off a little shy

But I do

But you throw your head back laughing like a little kid

I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did

I've been spending the last eight months

Thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end

But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again

And we walked down the block to my car and I almost brought him up

But you start to talk about the movies that your family watches

Every single Christmas and I want to talk about that

And for the first time what's past is past

'Cause you throw your head back laughing like a little kid

I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did

I've been spending the last eight months

Thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end

But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again

Make friendship with a good book and let yourself go in the breeze of imagination ... A book, is always a good friend.

Hanoi begins its Morning very early. It was only 6:20 A.M but the streets are already crowded and people already rush to the streets, to work, to school. Still find peace somewhere in this busy city.

As the sun creeps over the horizon casting summer shadows across the land, temperatures rise and another day begins in the shire.

(Accidental) Double Exposure on kentmere 400

When someone tells me they're a better builder than me I drop this.

Concentric concrete circles with a crack. Now there’s a story! You’ll probably guess this was not a planned shot. I was quite disappointed ( read furious) to receive this during the week. It had been carefully chosen but not carefully transported. Not only that but the driver left some deep groves in my front lawn! I took the picture to inform the supplier. To my amazement, they wanted it back with them in order to refund. Fortunately they paid for the return which I’m grateful for but it leaves me wondering. Why? The nice lady at the post office had some unexpected weight lifting that day as did we.

Anyway only when I was reviewing my photos for submission did I see an opportunity had arisen. The nesting robins will have to make do with the pond as a water source.

I had taken a number of photos in black and white and was going to do a comparison of original bw versus converted but haven’t achieved that. In this one I have converted to black and white for this challenge.

Jumped out of my warm cosy car-ran to edge of prom-snapped this-jumped back in warm cosy car and cleaned the salty spray off my camera before driving down to Worthing on way home to get camera salty again-will I never learn lol

Day begins at the Mamallapuram Seashore.

For those who missed Brick Rodeo and BrickFair Virginia, here is a quick video showing the lighting effects that won "Best Lighted MOC" at both shows! 😉

October and Autumn Begins!

Car 1156 manoeuvres out of the depot to begin service.

298 Trams make up the eclectic fleet.

One of the times when I was pleased that we didn't research in advance as that would have spoilt the fun.

We nearly walked pass without seeing - can't recall who spotted.

It was quite a way from the other sculptures but I suspect it is also by Deodato Santos.

Found a shot from Barrie Reynolds which has confirmed this - the sculpture is called Woodland Folk - and I thought they were meant to be witches...maybe they are?

Sorry to crank up the misery even further but the industrial slaughter of our beautiful, blameless badgers begins again tonight, mothers and cubs snuffling up peanuts planted by the killers will be shot in their hundreds ( up to 2000 badgers ) in the coming months. That's not to mention the hundreds of badgers that will inevitably be killed illegally, the ' government ' know damn well they've given the green light for anyone to kill badgers.

I feel like a total hypocrite saying this given that I won't be there but the organisations trying to monitor and disrupt these appalling crimes are desperate for people to help. They need as many people as possible in the killing fields of Gloucestershire and Somerset, heroic souls will be flocking from all over the country to try and save our beautiful badgers. Even if you can't be there just making a small donation will help, those on the ground need night vision equipment in order to see what's going on and of course people travelling large distances to be there are going to end up spending money on fuel. There are camps set up with decent facilities I believe with a very friendly atmosphere by all accounts, these brave people out there in the darkness are all our badgers have now I'm afraid.
