I picked up these beets at the Pike Place Market last week, after being inspired by some Beet Gelato I had in New York. Pickings have been slim at the farmer's markets around here so far, but I'm hoping that June will quickly change that (she says as she stares out the window at gray, rainy skies).

Nearing the crest of Calimus Hill, a Union Pacific train of empty beet racks heads north on the Cascade Subdivision. Bound for a beet loader at Metolius on the Oregon Trunk, the train has just highballed Calimus siding. In mid-October, the Aspen groves in Klamath County hit their peak.

ST44-651 with short freight train to Raciąż, loaded with white beets for the Pfeifer & Langen Polska sugar factory at Glinojeck. The train will reach Koziebrody passenger stop and after several minutes terminates at Raciąż station, where the load is handed over to the industry shunter crew. November 23, 2006.

Just a year or two later root trains stopped running and the deliveries are made using road trucks.

ST44-651 z wahadłem buraków do Cukrowni Glinojeck, przemierza szlak między stacjami Sierpc i Raciąż, ściślej rzecz biorąc między przystankami osobowymi Zawidz Kościelny i Koziebrody. 23 listopada 2006 roku.

Jak jeszcze cukrownia Glinojeck brała buraki cukrowe koleją, start kampanii buraczanej oznaczał również sezon na kursowanie do paru wahadeł na dobę buraków z północy kraju do stacji Raciąż, skąd cukrowniane "tamary" zabierały warzywa do zakładu.

Niestety żyjemy w takim kraju, gdzie kolej jest uznawana za wybitnie passé. I nie daje rady z konkurencją ciężarówek. Nawet nie zauważyłem, kiedy te pociągi przestały kursować, chyba to musiało być jeszcze w ubiegłej dekadzie.

I realized that I cropped this wrong. I wanted something more like this... so here we are...

 

As daylight came, I watched workers collecting and transporting sugar beets. When we arrived the night before the fields was filled with greens. 2 days later it was empty and brown.

 

Art from my trip to Montana. This is just some digital stuff I worked on editing and manipulating. I like how these turned out.

The harvest is on the move as a pair of Union Pacific GP38-2s handle a train of sugar beets across the Snake River into Blackfoot, ID, on an October day in 1990.

Raw, pickled, baked, pureed for soup - beets are good for you! Some people don't like the texture, which make them a good option for juicing - add in a carrot, a little onion and celery and you've got yourself a very tasty juice. Like most of the other vegetables beets have also been struggling this summer but in the end they managed to produce a decent harvest.

 

I've given away most of my beet crop to the neighbours this year and left just a few for myself.

Enough for modest amount of homemade beet soup.

Southern Pacific was known for hauling sugar beets throughout California. The rail campaigns to move the beets to sugar refineries were a hallowed rite of railfanning, since they featured ancient wood beet racks. For the most part, beets were hauled by rail in Central and Southern California.

 

In 1990, a modest experimental crop of sugar beets was grown in the Klamath Basin of Southcentral Oregon and Northeastern California. The results were a success, so several thousand acres of beets were grown in 1991. SP beet campaigns came to Northern California.

 

Beets grown in the Klamath Basin were delivered to loaders on the Modoc Line at Merrill, Oregon and Stronghold, Cailfornia. The loaded beets were then hauled by SP to a refinery in Hamilton City, California. During the 1991 campaign, SP ran a daily local out the Modoc from Klamath Falls to switch out the loaders, along with a daily road job south on the Shasta Route.

 

The local on the Modoc was called the Staley Turn. It ran with three SD9s and 60 venerable beet cars. Here, it arrives at the Stronghold beet loader on December 1, 1991. The distant signal is for the diamond with Burlington Northern. The aging searchlight signals had originally been supplied by Great Northern. They were the only signaling on the entire Modoc Line.

 

Eventually, changing markets ended sugar beet farming in the Klamath Basin. The last beet trains on the Modoc ran in December 2000.
