I've been harvesting beets from the garden for a while now. Tomorrow will be the end! The greens are the best!
Of course, the old runways all have their uses for the farmer here - instead of stacking his sugarbeet by the road the lorries can drive up here and collect it to take it to Bury St. Edmunds to be processed without blocking up the lane - although if you're driving along that lane when one of those big beet lorries is cming in the opposite direction, you'd better get out of the way!
The Beetal goat is a breed from the Punjab region of India and is used for milk and meat production. It is also known as Lahori goat. Ears are flat long curled and drooping.
A loaded sugar beet train from the Klamath Basin has arrived at Tehama, California. Besides being the junction where Southern Pacific's West and East Valley Lines diverged, Tehama was the spot where SP interchanged beet trains to shortline California Northern. When the CFNR arrives with empties from the beet refinery, power on this KFCNU (Klamath Falls - California Northern Unit train) will cut off, grab the empties, and depart eastward after an air test.
Fall 1993 was the only beet campaign that featured the ancient wood beet racks running on the 'new' CFNR, which had assumed operation of several SP lines a few months earlier. Unfortunately for my friend John Shaw and me, this train has a healthy cut of new steel beet racks right behind the power. After a few photos of the handoff, we decided it was time to cut and run for home in Portland.
The appearance of SP 7301 strongly suggests that noted railfan Dick Dorn had induced a crew on an earlier run to allow him to wipe down the road grime on the front of the unit. Dick's 'nose jobs' enhanced the photogenic potential of the SP warhorses on the beet trains, while also cleaning the windshields to improve visibility for the crew.
Lifting fodder beet on 22nd October. What a day for this time of year. Harsh light certainly but with clouds like that I can live with it!
I made two soups meant to be served in tandem. Both vegan, I believe.
The asparagus soup:
Lots of asparagus, mirepoix, garlic, garlic fried in oil, rice milk, almond milk, potatoes, lots of basil, vegetable broth, salt, paprika, dry vermouth, and I'm probably leaving something out.
The Beet Tomato soup is lots of beets, cherry tomatoes, sun dried tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine, a little cinnamon, seeded & peeled cucumber, parsley, potatoes, almond milk, rice milk, honey, mirepoix, garlic, vegetable broth, and pomegranate juice.

Southern Pacific's Staley Turn approaches the diamond with Burlington Northern at Stronghold, California. During the 1991 Klamath Basin beet campaign, this job train switched out beet loaders at Stronghold and Merrill, Oregon on the Modoc Line.
The small building at left contained the electronics for the interlocking at the diamond. Great Northern installed the interlocking when they built their line to Bieber.
