Southern Pacific's westbound Copic Local is rolling a trainload of sugar beets toward Klamath Falls on the Modoc Line. It just finished switching out the beet loader at Merrill, Oregon.

Fall 1992 was the third beet campaign in the Klamath Basin. Before the last beets were harvested in 2000, both the wood beet racks and the Espee would pass into history.

Two ÖBB class 2016 meet under the Wild West-like scenery of silos and elevators at Raasdorf, where the left diesel came to a halt with a load of sugar beets ...

Because from Sept. to Feb. it's sugar beets time in eastern Austria !

But it is uncertain how long we will see those sweet loads and mountains of beets at collection sites along the tracks ? Not only because this crop year was actually very dry and poor, but also because this Oct. the protected European sugar beets market with the EU subsidies of guaranteed prices and quantities became free. So maybe the enormous annual sugar beets campaign with hundreds of beets loaded freight trains will soon be over ? The amount in my photo was also very small. Just a pile of maybe two truck loads and about 1 m high, but good enough for a sweet foreground ... ; )

PS: The writing on the elevator means:

"No future without farmers !" ...

Raasdorf, 10 / 17

While preparing beets to make up a pot of curried beets, I was struck by how interesting the patterns in the pieces of beet were. Looking at them, I decided that I wanted to see what I could do, turning the bowl into a B&W photo.

During the afternoon of a very pleasant 29th September 2007 during the "Über'n Buckel" ("Over the Hump") Plandampf and heritage diesel traction event based on Heilbronn, DB 212 084 arrives at Hoffenheim station with empty 4-wheel wagons representative of the seasonal sugar beet traffic once conveyed over this route until 1991. The V100.20 Class of 1,350hp Bo-Bo locomotives were built between 1962 and 1965 by Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK), intended for mixed traffic use on the main line and on steeply-graded sections of the DB system, replacing duties previously performed by steam traction.

The Staley Turn, Southern Pacific's Modoc Line beet switcher in 1991, crosses Burlington Northern's line to Bieber, CA on a clear November day. The train is departing Holly Sugar's receiving station at Stronghold, CA with 30 loads of sugar beets.

The upper quadrant semaphore signals were installed by Great Northern, and survived for a few years under BNSF. When they were finally replaced, they were the last semaphores in service on a Class I mainline in California.
