Sounds like a delicious Chinese dish one would order!

The Hereford cows seem to like it. I had never herd (😉) of feeding Cattle this type of food, but apparently it is very popular. These guys and girls were certainly eating it up.

Killarney in Queensland, Australia is famous for its beef, although the abattoir closed many years ago. Despite this fact, this local was definitely keeping its distance.

This is a view down the working chute of our new stock pens. I like it because my animal behavior proffesssor back in college used to tell us to evaluate animal handling facilities by going through them as the animals would. For cattle he called it "Beef Like Me."

Willie Wagtails are the largest and best-known of the Australian fantails. They are often found in the company of cattle and sheep. They either run behind the moving animal snatching insects as they are disturbed, or sit on the animal’s back, darting off to capture a flying insect and then returning to its mobile perch.

I have a Willie Wagtail who visits my yard multiple times each day. It mounts lightening raids on the meat dish and is gone in an instant, only to return a short itme later for more food. Not a great shot, but I caught Willie making off with a big ball of meat in this shot.

For 122 Pictures in 2022 #102 "Summer eating". Nothing says summer like cooking something on the grill. These are beef ribs, almost as big as those in the Flintstones. For some reason, the butcher cut these into shorter segments, as though he was going to cut short ribs and then changed his mind. But they were more manageable than a full sized rack, so it worked out well. This was my first grilling session of the summer, delayed to to abysmal weather (either rain or extremely high winds). But the weather was perfect today - sunny and 89F/32C with low winds. The previous image shows them cooking on the grill.

Bombyliidae family, Geron sp.

According to bugguide.net, "Geron Meigen 1820

Greek 'old man' (imagine a humpbacked man carrying a cane)"

"Larvae are parasites of other insects: they have been reported on several species of moths. Adults take nectar at flowers, especially sunflowers (Asteraceae). Unlike many other bombyliids, Geron will often bob up and down above an inflorescence prior landing to nectar. Males often form loose swarms. "

And Happy Fly Day Friday!

Neither Rod nor I enjoyed our meal at Arby's last night.. We agreed we should have gone to Taco Bell, which is right next door... next time, we will.

Beef Stew just starting to cook through the condensation on the glass lid of the pot.

I think this is in subfamily Anthracinae of the Bombyliidae "bee fly" family. Possibly Anthrax sp.

I was pretty happy with this - never caught a fly in flight before.

This big Beef Tomato is truly meaty:-)

This is a "Bee Fly" with its fuzzy body that is actually similar to a Bumblebee. It feeds much like a Hummingbird on nectar.

An interesting looking insect and one that I have been tempted to pet with all that hair on its back.

Now that our summer is slowly coming to an end I thought I would get some shots using natural light instead of flash. Here were my settings, a bit unconventional.

Usually these fly away. Even when I have encountered them at night they seem be quick to fly off.

This is the second time I have had one stay put for me. I feel it may be the instability in yesterdays and todays weather (Thunderstorms).

It certainly was not the temp as it was anything but a cool morning.

It does look like it had a ruff evening ( I can relate )

I am grateful it was ground level and laying there making images it allowed me to move its stick around to suit background and composition. It was that well beeehaved.

"Beef, it's what's for dinner" was a slogan used by the National Livestock and Meat Board starting in 1992 to promote the consumption of beef. Apparently, this ad campaign has continued to the present with various spokespeople and advertisements. According to Wikipedia the slogan is recognized by 88% of Americans I won't speculate as to where the other 12% have been hiding, although to be honest I haven't seen any of their ads in recent years. For 121 Pictures in 2021 #89 "Slogans", this is a triptip roast I smoked to medium rare.

The technique used is to get the smoker to 200 - 250F and smoke until internal temp is around 115 - 120F. This cut does not need to stay in the smoker for many hours like a brisket. I also apply a rub of salt and garlic powder for around 6 hours before starting the cooking. Cooking time is approximately 1 hour, depending on weight and temp.
