A: "hey Greg, what about a camel ride?"

G: "sure, sounds like fun!"

A: "but, let's not do the touristy ride in the ruins! I want the real thing..."

G: "oh, Fuaz, can you organize a camel ride for us?"

F: "of course, I have a relative who does that. full day or half day?"

A+G: "well... full day!!"

uhm. that sounds great, unless you have tried to do that. or wait, don't!

riding a camel is quite different from riding a horse; the ride is smoother, and even when it runs (and camels can definitely *run*!) you don't bounce that much.

the only problem is that the saddle is very hard, and while it usually has plenty of padding for the camel, it doesn't have much for the rider. not much at all.

long story short, it was a tough ride, and my butt wasn't happy at all.

but it was still an amazing experience: riding out of Palmyra through country roads that became less and less urban and vanished into the barren land outside, which in turn became desert proper, a huge stretch of absolutely nothing except for a few thorny bushes and, here and there, herds of grazing camels. our guide was wearing his motorbike, and he mostly kept to himself, running after wild rabbits or something, leaving us in the complete quiet, in the wind of the running camels. amazing.

Photo was made in Beduin village. Under the only green tree were two kids, a boy and his sister. As soon as they saw any tourists they were running towards them with their arms open. On their face was shining such a sincere smile you rarely see on a face of our kids. It surprizes me how our kids that have everything can be so unhappy and how happy can be beduin kids that have alwost nothing.

They were running towards us asking for something, I checked all my pockets, couldn't find anything sweet, just found a business card someone gave me a day before on the street. You should have seen how happy those kids were and how amazingly they were staring at the card smiling...

Gerne habe ich die Einladung angenommen. So viel Gastfreundschaft!
