Bad Bedsheet Philosophy, a sideshow before the circus. Bread And Puppet presents Our Domestic Resurrection Circus, a brand new show in the tradition of the iconic Bread & Puppet Circuses that began at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont in 1970. As usual, the show draw on traditional circus tropes and familiar Bread and Puppet iconography to draw attention to the urgent issues of the day. Stilt dancers, paper maché beasts of all sizes and a riotous brass band make a raucous, colorful spectacle of protest and celebration. (Photo by Erik McGregor)

Installation
2017
On the left is a map that I used to devise and install the work in the exhibition. The blue lines are bedsheets hung from the ceiling using fishing wire.
The right image displayed is an example of the bedsheet's ability to distort the image. The picture was taken in a studio during an experiment with the moving image and a bed sheet - to explore how the fabric and projection interact.
I have chosen these images as footage from the exhibition is unclear and does not articulate the piece well.
The installation was a dark room, with three bedsheets dividing the room and creating an obvious walking path for the viewer. This was an exploration in creating immersive environments through film and installation. Thinking critically about how the viewer should engage with the work allowed me to develop the piece in a way that incorporated the viewers body, making it a subject of the work; as the viewer walks around the space their shadows are projected onto the bedsheets, slightly obstructing the view of the film/image. I intentionally chose the longest room in the exhibition space allowing the viewers to walk, move around and be fully immersed the textures, images and sheets that created the piece.
The desire for shadows is reflective of topics discussed in ‘The Contingencies of Pain’ that state “Experiences of dysfunction become lived as a return to the body[..] The intensity of feelings like pain recalls us back to our body surfaces” – (Leder 1990)
I wanted to bring awareness to the viewer through their body in this piece, the kind of awareness of the body that is heightened when one is suffering with chronic pain. The body becomes an obstacle in illness and the shadows of the viewer become an obstacle in viewing for the viewer. It forces one to look, without quite seeing. This explains the inability to feel someone else’s pain, physically.
During this time I was looking at an essay about Jana Starbeck's States of Being by Diana Nerimoff. I was inspired by Jana Sterbeck's use of sculpture and materiality which lead, after careful consideration, to use a bedsheet that holds intentional connotations.
Using an everyday domestic item such as a bed sheet infers the everyday-ness of chronic pain, it also reminds us of the term 'bed bound ‘as the viewer became bound in the experience. Physical and emotional pain are difficult to communicate, making these experiences feel lonely and private, much like the time spent in bed.
The experience took the viewer away from the rest of the exhibition, as they entered a dark room, closed off from everything else, with only their shadows and the images to be experienced. Visitors said the experience was isolating, lonely and that they felt trapped. This conveyed how long term illness can make one feel.
Below is the text that was displayed alongside the piece.
In Body
“I am interested in our bodies, Our shared expectations contrasted with our individual realties. Of having, being, accepting and living with a body; Our skin and bones and flesh and limbs.” Davies has focused on our most basic interactions with the physical world: movement, touch, breath and space. The Artist invites you to experience this work with your own body and to consider the experience of others.

It was sometime in the morning as I lay on my stomach, the left side of my facial stubble pressed firmly into my pillow. A silky smooth bedsheet wrapped around my naked body, like an ill fitting toga, leaving parts of me covered & other parts exposed. Warm air from a Dyson tower fan flows over my back and neck. My eyes are open, but unfocused as the items on my nightstand bleed together as if lost in a mirage. My mind has been aimlessly wandering through this haze of a fog that’s been lingering over my fading expectations for any kind of a meaningful future.
@whoopigoldberg’s character of Guinan in STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION said in THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS PART 2: “When a man is convinced that he is going to die tomorow, he’ll probably find a way to make it happen.” It’s a line I think about often when I’m in a depression, one that seems to fit in with the unfortunate ability that I have to manifest failure and loss in my life. It’s a challenge to overcome, to find something positive to replace the thoughts that are so often so negative.
Today I ran to the store to get a few groceries and a prescription for my Mum. The weather has been drizzly grey so when Kira saw me putting on my one sandal along with my offloading shoe, I asked if she wanted to come with me in the car. Her ears perked up and her eyes brightened as I said this, and followed with, “like old times, cause it’s cool out today.” She bounded past me into the garage as I stood up from the stoop. I attached her leash and off we went.
Waiting for the prescription we sat in the car together. Her little ears keenly aware of anyone passing by. It was enjoyable to see and for a moment my worries slipped away. I love my little sunshine so much.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
