We were going to have baked beans; instead we will have a freshly cleaned oven.

taken in Armenia, Colombia. Beans are ready to harvest when they turn red, usually in March and September. I love Colombian coffee because they're low in acidity and it has a lovely aroma. No sugar nor milk needed ;)

Inspired by my friend Di Northey who has one of the best eyes for a good picture in all sorts of places I wouldn't look! www.flickr.com/photos/dimarg/ - These are bean flowers -am amazed I would find so much detail in my vegie patch!

I saw some bean bags at Party City to use with party games - they were $10 for 4 bean bags!! So I bought a bag of dried beans for $1.16, used scraps of fabric I had on hand, and viola! I think they'll be perfect for games on lazy summer games outside, and great for the cold winter months when the boys need a new indoor activity.

I couldn't figure out how to store them, and ended up making a draw string bag to keep them in. So, far I'm having more fun than the boys :)

Fresh home-grown beans we brought with us to cook in the caravan.

Lovely!

A very worn, largely illegible, and graffiti-covere sign on a Manhattan business.

We don’t know if they are good beans, but at least they are free, or so we are led to believe. This window, made opaque, was under scaffolding that covered a sidewalk next to the building in Manhattan. Such scaffolding seems ubiquitous to me. I can’t vouch for this, but I was told by someone who should know about such things that the scaffolding contractors like to leave the stuff up since it is less expensive than moving it and warehousing it!

This kind of forgotten urban detritus fascinates me. At some point in the past, someone must have put some thought into the signage, determining which colors to use, what size fonts to use for different text, and aligning those yellow lines that divide it into sections. But neglect, weather, and graffiti have done their work, and today it is hard to even figure out what the sign is about.

I used these in a recipe this week with chicken sausages and rigatoni... They are an heirloom variety I get at Kalustyan's.

They're not cheap, but a bag lasts a long time (assuming you cook more common varieties mostly). 3/4 c dried works out to a can, after cooking.

(Curiously, daughter in UK says the rigatoni in her store is basically fluted ziti, and not nearly as hefty as what we see here in NYC.)

For September's Monthly Scavenger Hunt.

Dries red beans ready for use in your favorite recipe. I used these beans to make Buster Holmes World Famous Red Beans and Rice. Read our review of this cookbook.

Scarlet Runner Bean Phaseolus coccineus — I planted a lot of these because I had hoped to attract humming birds. Not many are left after they attracted rabbits, deer, and Japanese beetles. I haven't seen a hummingbird yet! 8>)

Even if the hummers don't find them - I may still have a few of the edible beans to enjoy myself.

I haven't been here for awhile ... I noticed that they finally got rid of the ugly concrete benches that straddled the plaza. Now it's open and freeer.

Steve's green beans, cooked with shallots and rice vinegar. I like the messy presentation.

I got this kitchen around 2 years ago.
