Indigenous Beading: We're beading the turtle from the creation story known as Skywoman. This creation story is shared by many Indigenous people in North America, including Potawatomi, Mohawk, Haudenosaunee, Oneida. The land we're on in Bloomington is part of the Potawatomi's ancestral homelands. The beading technique we're using for the turtle shell is called "return stitch." It is a relatively new form of appliqué beading and a simplification of two-needle appliqué as it only requires one needle.
Beading designs are passed down or inspired by nature like these beautiful pieces made by Margaret at the Warm Springs radio station.
I use a scrapbook paper holder to store my beading wire. You don't have to remove the spools from the foam to pull the wire off them, and the wire doesn't come unspooled when you're done.
