Indigenous Beading: We're beading the turtle from the creation story known as Skywoman. This creation story is shared by many Indigenous people in North America, including Potawatomi, Mohawk, Haudenosaunee, Oneida. The land we're on in Bloomington is part of the Potawatomi's ancestral homelands. The beading technique we're using for the turtle shell is called "return stitch." It is a relatively new form of appliqué beading and a simplification of two-needle appliqué as it only requires one needle.
This photo shows the four types of "charms" that I created and repeated over the length of the bracelet.
Materials:
Copper chain, wire, and claw.
Unakite rounds (8mm and 4mm)
Copper-glazed glass pearls (8mm)
Faceted copper glass (rondelle and bicone)
Brass flowers
Glass seed beads
Silver-plated headpins
