I don't know how to pronounce the name of the beach near Wairoa. It is however a stunning beach. I took Kelly to see it once her call was over and took advantage of the autumn light.

One of our first days out discovering the island of Saint Thomas, USVI (and tropical beaches in general). This is Sapphire Beach at Saint John Bay on the Northeast corner of the island. This beach is special to me because it's where myself and my family first saw turquoise water like this (and were blown away). I found that not all beaches looked this way and the ones that did, not all the time. It was dependent on lighting and cloud cover. Sometimes I'd look out on Bolongo bay where we stayed and it looked just like any inlet here in the Puget Sound (bleak, drab, boring) and other times it looked just like this. I also found out for snorkeling, the beautiful light blue water is boring because it's just sand (aka desert). The interesting things to see were over the dark colored areas which were usually reef(ish) and had lots of aquatic life.
Another beach walk last evening -a different beach this time.
It was the lovely light on the sand that originally caught my eye here.
The fence is there to help protect the dunes.
I don't know what Flickr does to the colour of photos but I have replaced this with a slightly tweaked version which looks much better than the original one I uploaded.

Newport Beach, incorporated in 1906, is an affluent city in Orange County, California, 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Santa Ana. The population was 85,186 at the 2010 census. The city's median family income and property values consistently place high in national rankings. Attractions include the city beaches from the Santa Ana River to the tip of the Balboa Peninsula, Corona del Mar State Beach, and the beaches at Crystal Cove State Park. Newport Beach is renowned for good surfing, especially between Newport Pier and the Santa Ana River. At the tip of the Balboa Peninsula, The Wedge offers world-class bodyboarding and bodysurfing. Newport Pier and Balboa Pier draw fishermen and sightseers. A boardwalk (actually a concrete path) runs 2.9 miles (4.7 km) from 36th Street in West Newport, past Newport Pier and Balboa Pier, to between E and F Streets on the Balboa Peninsula.
