Sanibel Island is widely known as one of the world's top shelling beaches. It is frequently covered with a variety of shells from the Gulf of Mexico.

1834AD 13th April, Rio Santa Cruz. Charles Darwin starts on 'expedition no. 5'. Darwin had been the second choice of Captain Robert FitzRoy to join him on HMS Beagle for the expedition to chart the coastline of South America. The expedition left England in 1831AD and arrived back in 1836AD.

Having the left the Falklands HMS Beagle arrives at the mouth of the Rio Santa Cruz and Captain FitzRoy prepares for an expedition up the Rio Santa Cruz Valley to find its source, 300km away in the Andes. FitzRoy had chosen the Rio Santa Cruz as an ideal place to lay her ashore. HMS Beagle had suffered some minor damage to the keel and damage to copper sheets, which were repaired whilst the group of 25 went on the expedition.

'Expedition no. 5' didn't reach its goal due to reducing rations, however it was rewarding with a lot of contribution to the work of Captain FitzRoy and Darwin - it had been a high point in their overall expedition. In particular it had strengthened Darwin's theory that the planet was in a state of constant flux was becoming stronger and stronger as he saw that the cliffs of the river valley, and indeed the Andes Mountains themselves, had been slowly raising above sea level.

Once the HMS Beagle had been repaired she re-entered the tropical waters and the expedition continued towards the Magdalen Channel.

I didn't really pose them like this, although I did have to get them to wait while I stepped to the right a bit, Lotus was being blocked by Texas before I moved, only wish I'd fixed the focus point giving me a more room at the bottom rather than the top of the frame, anyway ...

Most of the trails in this area were closed off due to erosion, but even the parking lot at Ecola State Park had quite a view!

A beach is a landform alongside a body of water which consists of loose particles. The particles composing a beach are typically made from rock, such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles. The particles can also be biological in origin, such as mollusc shells or coralline algae.

I like to explore these beaches where the rocks have been tilted over the aeons ... they are food for the imagination and the soul.

This one, of a view of a huge rocky outcrop, is to finish off this short series of photos of angular rockpools. Thanks for looking.

なんとか間に合った・・・

いやほんとダメかと思った今回www

いろんな意味でダメだがな!!!!!

The photo was taken a cold -14c and gale early morning not so far from where I live, on the way to work. Had to dim the colors a bit, but have tried to keep it as close to reality as possible, these colors you see here only appear when we have entered the polar night up here far north and east.

I visited venice beach a couple months ago, different world for someone from the midwest...

Last beach trip...leaving for a new beach adventure...hoping for some new photographic opportunities...Will be back soon.

Until then...

Venice Beach is one of the best places in LA to find interesting photos.

An absolutely gorgeous beach and no one around except us and a few seabirds such as the American White Ibis below. This was taken around American Thanksgiving ... the weather was a bit chilly by local standards but for us Canadians, it was lovely! We knew what we would be facing in a few weeks back home ...
