Ang batík ay isang tradisyonal na paraan ng pagkukulay ng tela. Tradisyonal itong isuot ng mga pangkating etniko sa Mindanao, lalo na ng mga Muslim. Bunga ito ng pangyayari na isang kinikilálang mulaan ng sining ng disenyong batik ay Java, Indonesia. Ang pangalan ay mula diumano sa wikang Javanese na amba (sumulat) at titik (tuldok o tulis). Ang paglalarawan sa proseso ay nahahawig sa paglikha ng tattoo, na tinatawag namang fátek sa Cordillera. Mabilis ang bigkas natin sa “batik” ngunit malumay (bátik) sa Javanese.

Pagkit (wax) at pantina (dye) ang gamit sa batik. Pinapahiran ng mainit na pagkit ang rabaw ng mga pinilìng bahagi ng tela. Pagkatapos, pinapahiran ito ng pangkulay na tina. Pag-alis ng pagkit, mananatili ang ikinukulay na tina sa bahaging walang pagkit. Inuulit ang pagpapahid ng mainit na pagkit at paglalagay ng isang kulay hanggang mabuo ang isang nais na disenyo. Ang pagtina sa tela ay isang sinaunang sining sa mga pook na gaya ng Ehipto, India, at Tsina. Ngunit ang masalimuot na disenyo ng batik ay higit na nilinang sa Java. Noong 2009, kinilálang Pamanang Pandaigdig ng Unesco ang batik ng Indonesia.

Sa Indonesia, tradisyonal ang batik na may habàng 2.25 metro at ginagamit na kain panjang at sarong. Isinusuot din itong tulad ng malong ng mga Mëranaw at Tausug. May mga disenyo ng batik na para lámang sa mga maharlika at may disenyo na ginagamit sa kasal. Ang presyo ng batik ay depende sa disenyo, uri ng tela, at ingat ng paggawa. Pinakamahal ang tinatawag na batik tulis halus na sinasabing ilang buwan ang paggawa. Mumurahin ang gawa sa pabrika, malimit na mulang Thailand, at nagkalat ngayon sa mga tindahan ng tela sa Mindanao. (VSA)

With encouragement from a flickr friend (that's you Deb!), I've begun taking pics of the textiles I collected throughout SE Asia (mostly). Unlike the rest of them, these first 2 were the most accessable as they've been out of the box & adorning our walls for quite some time.

This batik is one of my favorites. It's framed & under glass, hence the slight reflection.

I took Geo out to some of the historical places...we took lots and lots of pics... so get ready for more Geo Spam before she leaves on Monday... Gosh i;m gonna miss her a lot... :(
