The stairs in this batik are located on Santorini Island in Greece. They extend from the harbour to the main part of the city, Thira, at the top of the stairs. I took a photo of this scene when I visited in 1977, This batik is by Janice Norberg Cinquegrano, made in 1978. (Oakland, CA)
Essa variação da técnica do batik consiste em utilizar a parafina para formar rosas estilizadas sobre a seda previamente pintada em várias cores. O resultado é belíssimo!
Técnica interessantíssima e milenar, o batik se caracteriza pelo uso da parafina/estearina e continua sendo um "must" no aprendizado da pintura em seda. O microcraquelado, resultado da utilização de cubos de gelo na finalização do trabalho, é mais uma das belas características dessa técnica milenar.

Etymology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batik)
Although the word's origin is Javanese, its etymology may be either from the Javanese amba ('to write') and titik ('dot' or 'point'), or constructed from a hypothetical Proto-Austronesian root *beCík, meaning 'to tattoo' from the use of a needle in the process. The word is first recorded in English in the Encyclopædia Britannica of 1880, in which it is spelt battik. It is attested in Indonesian Archipelago of the Dutch colonial period in the various forms mbatek, mbatik, batek and batik.
