This beautiful equestrian statue of Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc), sword raised high, protects the Basilica of Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart) in Montmarte. It is one of a pair, the other being of Louis IX, of bronze sculptures by Hippolyte Lefebvre in 1927,
There are numerous monuments throughout France (and throughout the world) to Joan of Arc, seen as an inspirational figure. Dozens of movies, hundreds of books and articles and paintings commemorate her spirit and heroic actions in the 15th century. She was burned at the stake at the age of 19 in 1431.

***A Father & Son Trip to Europe.***
The very first time I traveled with my only son in Europe!!!
Basilique du Sacré-Coeur
After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, it was proposed to construct a church to the Sacred Heart on the butte Montmartre. Although originally the fund raising was by public subscription, in 1873, the National Assembly declared its construction to be a state undertaking. Of the 78 entries in the competition for its design, the one chosen was by the architect named Abadie. He was already well known for his restoration of the St-Front Cathedral in Périgueux.
The plans for the new basilica called for an edifice of Romano-Byzantine style, and the first stone was laid in 1875. Abadie himself died in 1884 with only the foundation having been completed.
Completed in 1914, it was not consecrated until 1919 after World War I had ended. The final cost was 40 million francs. Since 1885, there has been perpetual adoration and worship within.
The interior of the church contains one of the worlds largest mosaics, and depicts Christ with outstretched arms. The nearby bell tower contains the ``Savoyarde''. Cast in Annecy in 1895, it is one of the worlds heaviest at 19 tons.

Despite being quite touristy I still really like the Montmartre area of Paris. You only have to venture a few streets back from the Sacré Cœur to find the Paris of the past.

Had to post at least one "postcard" style pic from my trip and it might as well be from Paris...
Taken from the roof of my company's office. Before shooting this I was in a meeting and the room had a single square window that framed the Sacre Coeur perfectly. It was a bit distracting as you could imagine! ;) Afterwards my colleagues took me to the roof to get a better view and that's where I took this.
