The "Basilique du Sacré Coeur" in Paray-le-Monial. The monastry existing since 974 became a dependency of nearby Cluny in 999. The first church "Paray I" was consecrated by Odilo of Cluny already in 1004. Though enlarged later to "Paray II" by the still existing westwork and narthex, Hugh of Cluny started the building of now existing church "Paray III" in 1090. As it has lots of similarities to the only little older "Cluny III", it is sometimes called "Small Cluny".

Here are the 8 medallions of the lintel. The very left one (sorry for the cut), shows a rosette, the very left one a small round children face, that could be a sample for Konrad Lorenz´

cuteness-concept. Then left and rigt are two pairs of mythic animals. The two medallions in the middle show two rotated faces, licking the edge of the lintel. I could not find out the meaning of that very strange behaviour - at the prominent "point of entry".

Window in the Sacred Heart Basilica at Koekelberg, Brussels, which combines a memorial to the tercentenary of the birth of St Jean-Baptiste de la Salle in 1651 ( shown in the left centre light with one of his pupils) with a tribute to St Louis-Marie de Montfort in the other two lights. He, in turn, is shown with one of the Daughters of Wisdom kneeling at his feet ( Louise Trichet perhaps?) wearing the distinctive dress of the order. Thus are commemorated two saints who worked hard for the less fortunate, bringing free education to the poor and succour to the disabled. Neither date nor artist visible.

The Sacré-Cœur Basilica (French: Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, "Basilica of the Sacred Heart") is a Roman Catholic basilica and popular landmark in Paris, France, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sacré-Cœur is pronounced /sakʁe kœʁ/. The basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre (Montmartre butte), the highest point in the city.

Sacré-Cœur is built of travertine stone quarried in Château-Landon (Seine-et-Marne), France. This stone constantly exudes calcite, which ensures that the basilica remains white even with weathering and pollution.

A mosaic in the apse, entitled Christ in Majesty, is among the largest in the world.

The basilica complex includes a garden for meditation, with a fountain. The top of the dome is open to tourists and affords a spectacular panoramic view of the city of Paris, which is mostly to the south of the basilica.

The overall style of the structure shows heavy Romano-Byzantine influence, an unusual architectural vocabulary that was a conscious reaction against the neo-Baroque excesses of the Opéra Garnier, which was cited in the competition.[10] Many design elements of the basilica are based on nationalist thematic: the portico, with its three arches, is adorned by two equestrian statues of French national saints Joan of Arc (1927) and King Saint Louis IX, both executed in bronze by Hippolyte Lefebvre; and the nineteen-ton Savoyarde bell (one of the world's heaviest), cast in 1895 in Annecy, alludes to the annexation of Savoy in 1860.

The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris, France that stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as the "Place de l'Étoile". It is at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. The triumphal arch honors those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. On the inside and the top of the arc there are all of the names of generals and wars fought. Underneath is the tomb of the unknown soldier from World War I.

Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

Since we were close to Montmartre we decided to go to the Sacre Coeur Basilica - big mistake. There was a wine festival going on and the entire area was completely packed - now we know how sardines feel! We got out of the crowd and ambled around Place du Tertre, watching the artists at work, and then ambled down the hill back to our room - what a great day!

I took these photos in early October 2016.

The Musée d'Orsay is a museum on the left bank of the Seine. It is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, an impressive Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900.

The museum opened in 1986 and holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1915, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography

It is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces by painters such as Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin and Van Gogh.

Enjoy !
