A new fleet group 1-50 came into service gradually from the end of 1972 and BAS IL (affectionately named owing to its number plate) would spend its entire public service life with ECT at Longstone depot, until its demise in 1990. Since then BFS 1L has been looked after by the Lothian Bus Consortium and has travelled extensively, both here in Scotland and on the Continent.
Basil ran around on the internal service at this year's Lathalmond rally and, typical of the Atlantean AN68's you could hear its heartbeat and personal characteristics from quite a far!
I was taken to the Open Day at Shrubhill in 1973 to see for the first time Atlantean AN68 number 2 - compared to the Atlantean PDR1 / A1's it seemed huge and a bit bulky. We soon started to enjoy them as they arrived in hundreds...dominating until January 2000.

The Church of Santa María della Salute, known as "La Salute", is one of the most important in Venice. It is located in Campo della Salute, in Dorsoduro, at the entrance to the Grand Canal.
Dedicated to the Virgin who had been asked for the end of the plague epidemic that killed 30 percent of the population. It was designed by Longhena, in the mid-seventeenth century, and its construction took more than 50 years.
The imposing Gothic temple has a large central octagonal space topped by an immense dome that has become one of the symbols of the city. It has small chapels around that space. The High Altar is presided over by an image of the Virgin and Child. All its interior decoration is sparse and simple. Highlights include frescoes and paintings by outstanding painters such as Tiziano or Tintoretto. Of the latter we can highlight "The Wedding of Cana" that is in the Sacristy.
On November 21 a celebration is celebrated in honor of the Virgin, which is one of the most populous in the city, and the boats form a bridge for the faithful to cross the Grand Canal to pray at the church.

Another wonderful bit of architecture in Toulouse, France...
From Wikipedia: The Basilica of St. Sernin is a church in Toulouse, France, the former abbey church of the Abbey of St. Sernin or St. Saturnin. Apart from the church, none of the abbey buildings remain. The current church is located on the site of a previous basilica of the 4th century which contained the body of Saint Saturnin or Sernin, the first bishop of Toulouse in c. 250. Most of the current building was constructed in the Romanesque style between about 1080 and 1120, with construction continuing thereafter. Saint-Sernin is particularly noted for the quality and quantity of its Romanesque sculpture. In 1998 the basilica was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the description: World Heritage Sites of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
When Chef Wage goes to the herb garden to collect fresh sweet basil; it means there will be something yummy to eat soon!

I learnt earlier this week that two more of Indy's friends have gone to play with him at Rainbow Bridge. Our friend Lesley was a regular visitor with Basil and Tess down the beach and the Cob in Llanfairfechan. Basil left this world last friday the 28th September aged 11 just a few weeks after 14 year old Tess. Both were well loved and had a great life together. Indy and Basil always chased the ball together and once with Red all ended up the pond together after going after a wayward ball. I wish I had my camera that day to capture their expressions as they waited to be fished out as they held onto the side of the pond like bottles in a row. Tess was the quieter one and like most collies when she acknowleged you it was a compliment. My heart goes out to Lesley for losing her beloved companions so close to each other.
Happy Thanksgiving to all our Canadian friends too.
Basil - (Bajeicò in Genoese dialect)
This aromatic plant, basil, is passionately cultivated by Genoese and is the essential ingredient of the Ligurian salsa called “PESTO”. (Green sauce with basil, garlic, pine-nuts, Sardinian sheep’s milk cheese and Parmesan, and virgin olive oil. All ingredients which should be ground in a marble mortar with a wooden pestle, hence the name)
It is not enough to say basil to make good pesto. It is essential know where it comes from.
Basil must, at the very least, be grown near the sea; that grown inland, worse still if it comes from the other side of the Apennines, tastes of mint. And that is the worst definition for basil: to taste of mint!!
In this photo basil cultivated in my garden.
