First of all, sorry for the corny title but it's just that I heard they wanted to raise the toll to a whopping 10 dollars (let's just skip 7, 8, and 9!) and do away with the human toll attendants. I don't even want to know how that is possible or seems like a good idea to anyone. I don't even use those creepy "self checkout" things in Home Depot.
Ah, that's better. Haha. With that out of the way, I just wanted to pay a little respect to the base of this often-photographed tower, seeing as how lately it has been all about the tips.
Thanks for looking!

The spread wings of the Crested Caracara provide a subframe for the second Caracara at the top of a cell tower they have frequented over the past week or so. Before they move on, I will take as many pictures as possible. By the way, I’m not really sure if this counts as “subframing.”

This short film is based on the fine exhibition at the Inveresk Museum in Launceston, “H.J. King: Cameras and Carburettors”. It runs until late August 2023. www.qvmag.tas.gov.au/Whats-on/Museum-at-Inveresk/HJ-King-...
I was kindly given permission to photograph each of the exhibits (including video recording the film excerpts that I edited and posted yesterday). They even bent their no tripods policy for me to make this possible. For obvious reasons the museum lighting of the exhibits is dark (these photographs are precious and bright light would destroy them quickly). So once again I was able to trust the low light capabilities of the Nikon D850 to deliver, though manual focus was necessary under these conditions. So every single photograph here is captured by my camera.
Born in 1892, Herbert John King (known as H.J.) was a devoted amateur photographer, though he did in the 1920s pioneer an aerial photography business producing maps. He was industrious and innovative and was one of the early proponents of infrared photography. His greatest service in photography was not some stylistic innovation, but rather as a faithful recorder of a passing world. His historical photographs are for that reason very important.
King’s other passions are also made known in this short film. Motorcycles, and the natural world of wilderness and Tasmanian flora and fauna. The second half of his life (King died at 80 in 1973), was one of distinguished community service, as a founding member and President of the Launceston Field Naturalists’ Club, and a distinguished member of the Tasmanian Royal Society.
He was also a lifelong member of the Christadelphians, and as such was a pacifist and environmentalist.
Enjoy the presentation and the period music.

* A note about the lighting. You notice the sepia tones. Some of King's earliest photos are in sepia or have this soft brown tint. This is the result of a chemical process that took place in the darkroom. Its purpose was to prevent fading and prolong a photograph’s life and archival value. But almost all of his post 1920 photos are straight black and white. The reason I opted to go with the museum lighting temperature is that this is exactly the experience you have of looking at these photographs in the exhibition. Frankly I also think it adds a level of warmth (quite literally in fact with the lighting) to the photographs.

'Why are we this close to these large boulders and rocks? Shouldn't we build a bit further away?'
These rocks will be part of our base... We can build higher this way, and use those natural caves as well...'
'Them rocks look weird, regular, almost build!'
'Ah well, probably just basalt or something, you have those weird geometric rock patterns at some place on earth too...'

Kleine Brogel Air Base, Belgium - 19 Sep 15
Base dedicated by the team sponsor, Atarbos, to the winners of the military Pyrrhic dance contest and of the circular dance contest. The two blocs of the base supported three bronze statues of different sizes.
The relief on the left bloc [Bloc A] represent seven men arranged in two groups of similar figures, moving towards a female figure; the rightmost group is adjacent to a woman portrayed with her head turned 3/4-view to right; her left leg supports the weight, while the right one is relaxed; she wears a long-sleeved chiton, a himation draped over her left shoulder and around her torso, falling back over her bent left arm; the right hand is near to her side.
On the right, Bloc B, there is a female character taller and slimmer than the previous one: she could be the personification of Panathenaia. The woman is portrayed standing 3/4-view to the right, the weight on her left leg, the right one is relaxed. Her clothing is similar to that of the woman portrayed in the Bloc A. In front of her there are eight nude youths arranged in two groups of four. Each one has the weight on his right foot and the bent left leg pulled behind it. The youths wear a small (Attic) helmet; their slightly bent right arm, with clenched fist, is close to side; they hold a sharply foreshortened round shield on their outstretched left arm. The shields of the dancers overlap by a different degree.
Two narrow bands (ca. 3 cm.) above the reliefs of the two blocs bear an inscription reading:
Block A: νική[σας κυκλίωι χο]ρῶι.
Block B: [πυρριχ]ισταῖς νικήσας Ἄταρβος Λυ[σιστράτου. -- Κ]ηφισό[δ]ωρο[ς ἦρχε]
[IG 2.2, 3157]
Block A: Having won with a cyclic chorus.
Block B: Having won with pyrrhic dancers, Atarbos son of Ly[sistratos] (dedicated). Kephisodoros [was archon].
Thus, as indicated by the inscription, the pose and the attire of the dancers, the scene carved on the Bloc B represents the pyrrhic dance, one of the earliest contests in the "Panathenaia" . The figures on the Bloc A are harder to identify. According to the inscription carved on the base, some scholars suggest that they are the participants in the "Dithyramb", a tribal contest first instituted in Athens as a tribal event at Great "Dionysia" in 509/508.
