Gerald's been out here a long time. He grew up in the Bronzeville neighborhood and Altgeld Gardens. His Grandma and Mom raised him. His hip is bad and he can't move around much, so that's limited him ability. He said he is good in the culinary arts, can make pretty much everything and can grill up fantastic meat. If he could have anything, he'd love to cook again. During the wintertime when it's cold, he just medicates his hip. He's been on this corner for quite awhile. To someone who's depressed he'd say, "Just reach out. Talk to a minister, talk to the Salvation Army." Connect with people. He's just trying to make ends meet. It's a long day out here. Gerald sleeps on Lower Wacker. His request was for underwear, t-shirts, and new shoes.
Captured this guy refilling his coolant tank with anti-freeze in the parking lot of a big box store. A scene played out across this country every day. Often, the empty container is just left on the pavement, but I didn't stick around to see what this guy did.
If you view it large you can see the huge ash hanging from his cigarette! Glad it's not gasoline.

Picked up the SuperMCToys Women's Street Style Flight Jacket set, since there were a few parts in it that looked really nice and Magic Cube has generally produced really good stuff in the past.
This is Tommy a delightful young man I encountered him in my local corner shop. The same place I took the Imaran photo. Imaran was talking to me about his photograph and asking me if I would take a photo of himself, his wife and daughter. Tommy overheard me. I exchanged my place in the queue for a photograph of him. He asked about the 100 Stranger Project and was happy to have his photograph taken after I explained. We went outside as there was a nicer background. The light was very bright but I had a polarising filter so that helped. Tommy told me about a tattoo on his left arm with the words 'Essex Police'. He said that he had it done after his Grandfather died last year (he had been a policeman in Essex). Tommy said that his grandfather was born in Clacton which is not far from my place of birth (Harwich). He was very fond of him. He then went on to say that next year he was hoping to move to Australia where he has relatives and if he likes it to remain there. I wished him all the best for his future.

I think the girl did get made up, but by the time I returned to grab a shot a lot of people had crowded in front of me. And by the time they had cleared out the father and his daughter were gone. Too bad. I would have liked to see how her makeup came out. Still, she looked adorable sitting there on her father's lap, holding her stuffed unicorn. So at least I was able to get that.
Shawn was sitting by a lightpole at the southeast corner of Jackson and Franklin, outside McDonald's. He's been out here for a few months. He grew up in Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. His parents were drug addicts and he ended up there. His mom recently died of a drug overdose. He was evicted awhile ago and lost all the pictures he had of his mom. Which was tough, because he loves photography, "my first camera was a Pentax K1000". Then, he pointed to his head, as if to say, "I've got the memories". He was a bike messenger for awhile, but then got into a downward spiral of drugs. "Bike messengers like to party", he said. He got addicted to heroin and methadone. "It is TOUGH to get off that stuff!", he said. He's been clean for a year, which is something he's real proud of. "Twelve years ago, you couldn't find drugs on the street (in Chicago). You had to go west or south of the city. Now, it's everywhere..." He's going to California next week. A gentleman from the Board of Trade agreed to buy him a bus ticket. I asked if he had any friends out there and he said, "just one--and she lives in San Francisco". He's going out there because he hates the weather in Chicago. He was so...cool. I wish he wasn't going, because people need to hear his story...
Gene's been out here about 35 years. Gene sells flowers by the bridge on Monroe Street. He's just trying to make somebody's day. "Everybody likes flowers", he says. Everybody needs their day made better and that's what he's trying to do. He said homeless people can be business people too. He sells bunches of carnations for $5 and $10 dollars, depending on the size. Gene also sells candy bars when it gets colder. He can't sell them during the warmer months as they melt. That's when he started selling flowers. He has a very nice cart that he holds them in, along with a sign that reads "fresh flowers". He has a couple of spray bottles as well that he uses to keep the flowers fresh out in the sun. He takes great pride in his business. Both he and Fred told me about the new ID cards they got from City Hall identifying them as homeless (their ID card doesn't have an address on it). Fred was the first to point that out. Gene is a very positive person and didn't really have anything negative to say. He seems happy to be out here making people's day a little better. He was very engaging with people and wasn't afraid to be a salesman with people as they passed by. He greeted people and had a few "regulars" who came by as we were talking and he flashed them a smile and a "thumbs up". Gene was eager and willing to talk and enjoyed sharing about his life.
The jacket has a realistic orange lining, but SuperMCToys was smart enough not to line the sleeves. Some 1/6 manufacturers do, and it only makes it hard to get arms through them.
