Hereios - Head Furniture (headwear)
This is a promotional cap I got from work when we started selling Rhino Rush energy shots. And I should've shaved before taking this picture.

I found a few of the new collector's packs, so the new stuff is coming out. I bought 2 from the Mrs Fields store, & 1 from the Sketchers store. I almost bought the Mrs Fields store, I had it in my hand & was walking around with it, but I changed my mind at the last minuter. I may still end up with it :-) Everything has stickers you have to put on, including the sneakers. which are supposed to fit the MiWorld dolls, but I don't have any so I can't tell how well they fit.
Let me set the scene: a freshly laundered baseball cap, line dried. I put it on and am out the door. Then I feel something moving...

If you'd like a picture of positivity, Ansel (AHN-sel) is your guy. "Hello beautiful!", "hello princess!", "have a great day everyone!", "it's a great day to be alive!", "God is good!", he says in his Jamaican accent. It's even more inspiring when you know that he's been homeless for four years. He lost his home and since then, he's been on the street, but you'd never know it. He comes dressed with a smile and encouragement. Thousands of people hear his compliments and well wishes and whether they acknowledge him or not, he knows he's making a difference. If you're depressed or discouraged, his words to you are this: "It's a beautiful day, you don't have to worry, God is good--God provides, he will take care of you. Everything's gonna be alright!" If I would've stayed there longer, he would've preached a sermon, but that's the gist of it, and he made my day. He might be homeless, but he's not hopeless...
I don't think there's anything more I can say about this scene. The picture tells the story ...

This is a continuation of a Flickr set that I started in the summer of 2009, and continued in 2010 (in this Flickr set) and in 2011 (in this Flickr set) . As I noted in those earlier collections of photos, I still have many parts of New York City left to explore -- but I've also realized that I don't always have to go looking elsewhere for interesting photographs. Some of it is available just outside my front door.
I live on a street corner on the Upper West Side of Manhattan where there's an express stop on the IRT subway line (with a new space-age subway station), as well as a crosstown bus stop, an entrance to the West Side Highway, and the usual range of banks, delis, grocery stores, fast-food shops, mobile-phone stores, drug-stores, Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks, Subway, and other commercial enterprises. As a result, there are lots of interesting people moving past my apartment building, all day and all night long.
It's easy to find an unobtrusive spot on the edge of the median strip separating the east side of Broadway from the west side; nobody pays any attention to me as they cross the street from east to west, and nobody even looks in my direction as they cross from north to south (or vice versa). In rainy weather, sometimes I huddle under an awning of the T-Mobile phone store on the corner, so I can take pictures of people under their umbrellas, without getting my camera and myself soaking wet...
So, these are some of the people I thought were photo-worthy during the past few weeks and month; I'll add more to the collection as the year progresses ... unless, of course, other parts of New York City turn out to be more compelling from time to time.

Robert was on the southeast corner of LaSalle and Ontario, sitting on a plastic crate with a sign. He was more than willing to talk and was so engaging that he was the first person that I completely forgot to photograph (so I had to walk back seven blocks to see him again). He told me he was part Mexican, Puerto Rican, and German. When I first walked up to him, I introduced myself and then asked him his name and he said "Hurt...I'm Hurt". Then he told me he was depressed because he went to a fast food restaurant and they wouldn't serve him. "I cried a little", he said. He said he does have a place to stay, but he comes out here so he can make a little money. He said it's very important to take steps forward. "If you keep doing the same sh*t, you'll stay in the same sh*t. He said "I can talk--I can dance", at which time he did a little jig. He was animated, friendly, and entertaining.

Trying out something in a different style for me. Line work is still pretty much me but composition and colors and style is a bit of a change for me.
All I saw was a hat and a small figure wearing it. At first, I could barely see her—she was tucked away in a corner near the Michigan Avenue bridge. Jennifer was sitting on the ground, head in her hands when I approached. (She told my why a bit later…) We shook hands. Hers were cool and weak. She was very thin. She said she has been out here for about three months (and I imagine longer). She has four younger children, who her sister-in-law is able to watch most of the time. If that’s not possible, she’ll resort to sleeping on the street with them, or she’ll find a room to rent, for about $36 a day. She avoids shelters, because of the bed bugs. Because of her situation, she could have her children out here with her she said, but that’s not fair to them: “They need to be kids and enjoy life”. What she wants is a job, but nobody wants to hire a homeless person. She also said it’s hard to find time to find a job, when she’s out here “begging”. Some people walk by and say disparaging things, she said, but “most homeless people are good people”. The reason she has her head in her hands, she said, is because “if I have my head up looking at people, they’ll put their wallets away. But if I hide my head in my hands, people give”.
The World Series begins tonight; The Philadelphia Phillies against the New York Yankees. The collective voice of prognosticators forms a drumbeat of baseball doom for the Fightin' Phils.
But, the Phillies are the defending champions. They have been challenged. They are no fluke. In an age of teams making it and disappearing the next year, this team has been tested and come out on top in every battle to this point. They will not go down easily. To beat them, any comer will need to bleed. They may not win the ultimate prize. It's going to be a difficult series. Make no mistake, these Phillies have proven worthy champions.
And, I believe! So, let the games begin.
