Just the base of a really tall antique opulescent glass vase. When I have more time, I hope to get the whole vase. Having trouble finding the right angle for the shot. Any ideas would be welcomed.
January 21, 2020 - This morning we had our first landing in Antarctica. I can now check off visiting all seven continents from my bucket list.
We visited Argentine Base Esperanza located in Trinity Peninsula. It is a inhabited year round by Argentine families. This base was founded in 1953 and holds the distinction of the birth of Emilio Palma on 7 January 1978. Emilio was the first person to be born in Antarctica.
We saw the historic stone hut where Andersson, Duse and Grunden from the 1903 Nordenskjold Swedish expedition lived. We also visited a small museum, chapel and the school house.
Wildlife seen: Adélie Penguins, Gentoo Penguins and Snowy Sheathbill. On our Zodiac ride back to the ship we saw a Leopard Seal.
Taken from inside the base and badly affected by bus window patterning as are many of the later photographs.

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska-Photo from the retirement ceremony of Lt. Col. Thomas Rietkerk, 611 Air Support Group, Thursday, July 7, 2011. (U.S. Air Force photo by Justin Connaher/JBER PA)
The Austral summer begins to draw to a close. Temperatures fall enough for the sea to begin to freeze. The relief ships make their final pass of the Antarctic Peninsula bases before heading back home
Those left on base settle down after the summer's frenetic activity in sometimes cramped accommodation. A new liner is fitted to the water tank, the weather is miserable and manky. As the ice in the bay begins to thicken, the annual thin-ice race takes place. It's a race to see who can cross the bay before the ice is really capable of bearing any load. During my stay, I cannot remember anybody winning.
Eventually the ice is considered to be capable of taking the skidoo, and somebody intrepid (or foolhardy) tests the theory.
The station for the Penang Hill Railway was in this building, although the ticket booth and entrance is to the left.
Wrecked base-model Toyota Corolla.
The registration has since been cancelled hence why the details have been wiped from the system.
The car has since been towed away.

The torsion balance is a precision measuring device to observe minute variations in gravitational force. To measure properly, it must stand on even ground, hence two levels on the azimuth and cups under the tripod legs for adjustment. The user rotates the body of the two-armed instrument three times to get six measurements and one set of data. The azimuth shows the degrees of rotation.
