In Essex County, MA, we have several beautiful barrier beaches on which my family spends long, memorable days each spring, summer and fall. Storms change these beaches each year in noticeable ways of course. But I worry about the damage that rising sea level and increased erosion could inflict on both the beaches and the wetlands they protect.

The Thames Barrier was opened in 1982, after 8 years of construction beginning 1974; however, the concept dates back to the 1950s with an idea by Charles Draper. The Barrier was built by Rendel, Palmer and Tritton for the Greater London Council (GLC) who managed it until 1986, with Thames Water Authority, then the National Rivers Authority and now the Environmental Agency taking over thereafter.
The Barrier works with rotating gates between each pier - these gates are brought up from the riverbed and can block the river outright or rotate to allow water to still flow downstream.
The Barrier was conceived in response to the North Sea Flood of 1953 (as well as a major flood in 1928); the project was assisted with the decline of the Docklands and move to Tilbury as this meant that the scheme didn't have to take this into account.
The work on the sound barrier along the CN/EJ&E tracks is about done. I was surprised they planted grass.
The wall was built by placing the support posts and then lowering the pre-made concrete sections between the posts.
To the left you can see one of the many barriers following the green line. Behind those is a UN patrolled buffer zone. You could also see bullet holes in many of the buildings. Crazy stuff.
