The Thames Barrier is one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world. The Environment Agency runs and maintains the Thames Barrier as well as the London’s other flood defences.

The Thames Barrier spans 520 metres across the River Thames near Woolwich, and it protects 125 square kilometres of central London from flooding caused by tidal surges. It became operational in 1982 and has 10 steel gates that can be raised into position across the River Thames. When raised, the main gates stand as high as a 5-storey building and as wide as the opening of Tower Bridge. Each main gate weighs 3,300 tonnes.

The barrier is closed under storm surge conditions to protect London from flooding from the sea. It may also be closed under periods of high flow over Teddington Weir to reduce the risk of fluvial (river) flooding in some areas of west London including Richmond and Twickenham.

The Environment Agency receives information on a potential surge tide from weather satellites, oil rigs, weather ships and coastal stations. They can forecast dangerous conditions up to 36 hours in advance, and will close the Thames Barrier just after low tide, or about 4 hours before the peak of the incoming surge tide reaches the barrier. Closure of all 10 gates takes about 1.5 hours and creates an empty reservoir for river flow entering the tidal Thames at Teddington.

The Thames Barrier will then remain closed over high water until the water level downstream of the Thames Barrier has reduced to the same level as upstream. This is a managed process to provide for different circumstances and takes about 5 hours. The Thames Barrier is then opened, allowing the water upstream to flow out to sea with the outward-bound tide.

The Environment Agency has closed the Thames Barrier 174 times since it became operational in 1982 (correct as of March 2014). Of these closures, 87 were to protect against tidal flooding and 87 were to alleviate river flooding. Closures of the barrier have increased through the decades:

[Day 1] [Day 2 Part I] [Day 2 Part II] [Day 3] Day 4

By morning the wind has slightly abated. An early start should hopefully see us sneak over the Barrier Range before Mother Nature fills her lungs again. Hopefully.

We are fed, packed and underway a touch before 8 am. Returning immediately to the rocky stream bed, it’s only a few hundred metres stumbling upstream before the mountains close in and we are confined to narrow margins on the stream edge. Several fordings of the stream ensue as we navigate our way around car-sized boulders and eroded banks.

Our eyes are mostly focused downwards, concentrating on every step. Occasionally we pause momentarily and take in the sheer enormity of the landscape we find ourselves in. We feel small. We also feel isolated. We are all alone out here. Our adventure, and should it come to it, our survival, depends completely on the items we’re carrying on our backs, on our wits, and on each other. But we are loving it. It’s this getting ‘back to basics’ that makes tramping so enjoyable.

This one just made me think of a discussion Tracey and I had today about perspectives ... about what we see - barriers or challenges or stepping stones - whether we resist and fight the things that apparently stand in our paths or whether we chose a wider perspective and see the many "easy" ways around the apparent "barricade" ...

Anyway - Tracey asked whether I have any shots of paths without people in them ... so I just had to come and upload this one ... - Tracey, I'll have a look what else I've got and you can have a look whether any of them "speak" to you, yes?

(just not tonight - internet / flickr is mucking about & it's getting late ...)

A return visit to the Thames Barrier to try for a sunset shot, however due to some mist and smog the sunset was very muted. Here we see the classic shot of piers 7 & 8 with Canary Wharf and the O2 arena in the background.

I arrived quite early - usually there are lots of people there. The barriers are advertising The Lion King.

I built a car for my Crash Test Dummy; heavily inspired [color-wise, anyway] by one from the Test Track queue. This was another quick build [an all-nighter] between larger projects.

This is Barrier Park at Silvertown in the borough of Newham in east London, it is a new park and one of our favourites - it has views of the Thames Barrier and a walk along the River Thames , it has a great cafe and a good childrens playground. Other outstanding features of this small park are its sunken formal garden and areas of wild vegetation - grass for playing and a set of fountains to cool off in summer. It can be reached by the DLR at Pontoon Dock station . I recommend a visit -and please take a look at my other shots taken here. www.flickr.com/photos/joebelle/tags/barrierpark/

Extending more than 2000 km and covering an area of some 350 000 sq km, it is the planet's biggest single structure made by living organisms, called coral polyps.

Despite its name, it is not a single reef but contains nearly 3000 different reefs. The reef is home to over 1500 tropical fish species, 400 types of coral, more than 200 species of bird, 5000 species of mollusc, 500 species of seaweed and six species of sea turtle. It is also a breeding area for humpback whales.

In recognition of its significance, the reef was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 and is the world’s most protected marine area.

Coral reefs worldwide are increasingly under threat from coral bleaching. This happens when algae living in the corals’ tissues, which capture the Sun’s energy and are essential to coral survival, are expelled owing to high water temperatures.

The whitening coral may die, with subsequent effects on the reef ecosystem, and thus fisheries, regional tourism and coastal protection.

The corals of the Great Barrier Reef have now suffered two bleaching events in successive years. Experts are very concerned about the capacity for reef survival under the increased frequency of these global warming-induced events.

Having a godly, positive attitude will make all the difference in enjoying happiness, success, and contentment in life. “Words can never adequately convey the incredible impact of our attitude toward life. The longer I live the more convinced I become that life is 10 percent what happens to us and 90 percent how we respond to it.… When my attitude is right, there’s no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me” (Charles Swindoll, Strengthening Your Grip).

1. Loving and serving God must have first priority in our thinking.

Deuteronomy 10:12–13 Now, people of Israel, listen to what the LORD your God demands of you: Worship the LORD and do all that he commands. Love him, serve him with all your heart, and obey all his laws. I am giving them to you today for your benefit. (GNT)

Joshua 23:11; 24:14–15; Matthew 22:37

2. We must maintain an eternal perspective in our thinking.

Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (ESV)

2 Corinthians 4:18 We look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. (ESV)

Matthew 16:23–25; Romans 14:7–8

3. Our minds must be focused on spiritual things—what God desires for us.

Romans 8:5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. (NIV)

4. We must have transformed, renewed minds and must not think as unbelievers think.

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)

Ephesians 4:17–24

5. We must think sacrificially, placing others ahead of ourselves.

John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends. (ESV)

Ephesians 4:2; Philippians 2:3–7

6. A humble attitude is pleasing to God. Sinful pride he clearly hates.

Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. (ESV)

Romans 12:3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. (ESV)

Proverbs 11:2; 16:18; 18:12; Romans 12:16

7. When others have wronged us, an attitude of forgiveness is commanded. Bitterness must be put away.

Ephesians 4:30–32 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. (ESV) Romans 12:17–21

The Thames Barrier is located downstream of central London. Operational since 1982, its purpose is to prevent the floodplain of all but the easternmost boroughs of Greater London from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the North Sea

Just like the reflection , a bit crazy , lots of sea weed about.

This was one of my most favorite shoots ever. The photography gods were definitely in a great mood. Shayla and I both have social anxiety issues but we are so comfortable with each other. She is one of the easiest and most gorgeous models I have ever worked with. We finished this shoot on a lovely evening in late September, just as the temperatures started to drop. The water in the Boise River was quite cold but that didn't stop Shayla. She was turning blue by the time we finished. Life is very, very good!
