Keanu (a Bengal cat) watches the August sun kiss the horizon.
Aug 1, 2025 | Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Seattle, WA USA
One of my fondest memories is of Simba (back) and the unbreakable, deep bond he shared with Keanu.
Their bond was unwavering and heartwarming. They’d spend hours in cuddle marathons, frolicking, and whenever they strayed apart momentarily, they always checked in on each other, never staying far apart for long. It was truly touching to witness. I think this new image perfectly encapsulates them exploring our favourite local botanical garden’s miniature pond, reflecting their deep connection and serving as a tribute to Simba’s loving spirit.
As more time passes, Simba’s absence these past four months has made me realise just how deeply intertwined our souls were. He was my soulmate, my sanctuary, and when he left, it felt as though a part of me was torn away. Though he is no longer physically here, his presence lingers in every moment, in the love we shared, and in the bond he had with Keanu. The ache of his absence never fully fades, but I am reminded daily of how much he still lives within me — the depth of his love, his spirit, an eternal part of who I am. I will always be grateful for the brief amount of time we had together, and the love we shared remains beyond measure, continuing to shape me every day.

Kailani-Topaz is my medical foster Bengal cat. When she arrived July 26, 2023 she was at death's door. She's beaten so many death-defying odds and has blossomed into a lovely purring princess.

The Ballard Locks are a popular destination in Seattle. A visit offers a variety of activities. If you would like more details and photos about my recent visit, check out my post Ballard Locks: Boats, Salmon, Gardens, and History on my blog Batteredsuitcase.net

The Ballard Dam and locks maintain the water in Lake Washington which is a fresh water lake the dam keeps the salt water out of the lake.
I went over to the Ballard Locks today, and the great blue herons were flying back and forth looking for nest materials, so I decided to utilize the zoom on my 18-140mm lens. Not perfect, but okay for my first time trying to capture these birds. This one flew right into a tree by where I was standing, but failed to break off any of its branches before moving on.

This public art project helps illustrate the function of the fish ladder system contained in Seattle's Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (known locally simply as the Ballard Locks) connect Seattle's lakes Union and Washington to the Puget Sound. The locks also contain a sophisticated fish ladder aimed at assisting local salmon in their spawning process as well as serving as a spillway which helps control water levels.
