grocery bag / preface, 2003, 20.5"w x 23"h, mixed media painting on a ripped open brown paper grocery bag.......
I collect shopping bags... not because I am a great shopper (not), but because I love them as vessels, containers and they feel wonderful in the hands and ripped open.... great graphic symbols for me as a starting point for my art......... I paint on them with great passion as they are transporters holding great energy and excitement for me............. What is interesting is this idea of the personal found object rather than the simple random selection of the mundane or utilitarian. Recycling is the way to go for our western materialistic civilization! I love the idea of incorporating our environment into the work. There is beauty in everything and I put it together so that the viewer can see it. I think that’s what makes art compelling… it’s about showing something that is very human and vulnerable in all of us, and not having (too much) fear about exposing it...........
Mum’s Day-tripper Bag
The majority of what I am designing at the moment is baby related! I have a 5 month old girl and a 3 year old boy and have an endless list of items that I want to design to make things easier or prettier or both!
This bag is really 3 items in one. The main bag, a change mat that acts as a compact changing bag in its own right and a toy I have named the sleepy fish!
I used the layer cake by cutting the squares diagonally into equal strips and piecing these for the main bag. I then used the off-cuts of this with some yardage to make the outside of the changing mat. The remaining squares (the louder, busier ones) were used to make all the components of the sleepy fish toy.
The main bag has 2 elastic sections at the sides designed to hold bottles or anything you need to hold upright, like lotion. There is a large zipped pocket for all your ‘mum’ bits – phone, purse, lippy etc. I have included the eyelet on a flap just inside the bag. This was primarily to hold my sleepy fish toy but could also be used for keys. As with any item that comes in contact with children it needed to be sturdy! I put metal studs on the bottom to protect the fabric and a plastic bag base to help maintain the shape and stability. I have also inserted tubing into the handles for extra strength and interfacing has been used throughout.
The compact changing bag is padded and wipe clean. It has enough storage for a basic change kit. i.e. two or three nappies, wipes and disposal bags. I designed it to be carried within the main bag for a quick change. Once the mat is unfolded all the other bits you need are right there. No more rummaging in your bag to find them mid-change! It is also great when you child is a little older and you don’t need to carry so much ‘stuff’ around. It can just be hung on the back of the push chair and doesn’t take up too much space. As you may have noticed, my laptop wrap, submitted in the audition round was born from this design as the fold up function is so quick and compact.
Although you can’t see it, the sleepy fish toy has a ball rattle inside and all the scales and fins have a crinkly cellophane sewn in to make lots of noises. Perfect for entertaining your baby while you change her. There is a hanging loop with Velcro so it can be attached easily to the eyelet inside the bag or onto a pushchair etc
Happy day-tripping!
Reece's MK3 Golf VR6 on air ride. He persuaded me to do a few day shots because with it being summer it's not dark until late.
For those wondering, he's done all the mods himself including the matte blue paint job! It's a great looking car, both inside and out!
A drawstring pouch combining crocheting, knitting and cotton print fabric.
This bag was inspired by the royal wedding of princess Viktoria in Sweden. The bag is fresh and sincere and very romantic, like her in the wedding party listening prince Daniel's speech.
Height from the center bottom to the top edge: appr. 11 inch.
Circumference: appr. 13 inch.
The bottom of the bag is crocheted from estonian and finnish wool.
The middle part is knitted from estonian and finnish and finnish wool. Between the knitting there's crocheted stripe.
The top is sewn from cotton fabrics.
The string is made from wool and has been felted for durability.
I got a new bag! It's great and very useful!

The bag is felted out merino wool. The rubber is recycled inner bicycle and moped tubing. My fingers still ache from all the stitching I did. Unfortunately the material was too tough for my sewing machine.

My mom gave me this bag a while back when I said I wanted a bigger one for knitting (she hadn't used it in years). I'm determined to start taking all my projects everywhere so that I always have something to work on when idle somewhere. I have a lot of Christmas knitting to do and want to start knitting all the time for gifts and my Etsy shop. Well, the bag is not very pretty, so I haven't used it before now. It's kind of vintage, but seems more to me like it's trying to be vintage. It just screams 1980's grandma.
Well, I finally decided to use it when my library bag was starting to wear out and become too small for my knitting load. This thing is AWESOME. Firstly, the top just pulls open. It has metal strips in the seam that bend to stay open, or bend to snap shut (note the perfect 6-sided opening in the photo below). It has pockets for needles and various other things. It's practically bottomless (for now). I have tons of yarn and projects in it already and there's so much room. The straps and bag itself are padded, so it's comfy to carry, too.
I don't know any easy way to cover it up, but I'll deal with the granny feel to it because it rocks.
BRIGHT YELLOW- Black- White- MICHAEL MILLER- Tote Bag- Purse
This bag is made using two different Michael Miller prints. The front pockets, sides and bottom, handles, and tab closure are all made from a print called "Iron Works". The upper front and back print is black and white with just a splash of yellow. To close this bag I am using a large black button with a tab closure. It is fully lined with two pockets inside of the bag.
i took a wee little break from drawing, quite frankly my wrist AND my neck were hurting so i decided to give this a shot!
I'm surprised all these things can fit in such a tiny bag, but i had to make it work, the bag is too beautiful to waste away in my closet.

Standard size shopping bag, currently offered for free with any bag sized purchase, at most US Target stores.
Note: No I haven't gotten a loose screw, I've had loose screws for a while now (; , I decided to photograph some of the miscellaneous shopping bags in my bag bucket given the 1000+ views on this old photo of Walmart bags. If you find these photos interesting, please let me know, fav, comment, whatever, and I will try to take more when the opportunity arises.

An absolutely fabulous pattern from The Happy Zombie - and it's free! It's a very small bag - better for lunch or gifts. I might try to make a larger one using the same pattern.
The fabrics are: Daydream by Cyndi Walker (main bag and pocket) and Amy Butler Full Moon Polka Dots in Lime (strap).
