Backpacking trip to North Fork Big Pine Creek in the Eastern Sierras (between Lone Pine and Bishop, CA. Bryan, Doug, Kelly and Jeremy spent two nights at over 10,000 feet!
On the last day of our backpacking trip, we packed up our camp below Puerto Nambe and strolled the last 4 miles back to the cars. We were sad to see it end, but happy to head home and share our memories with friends and family.
The "Women Backpacking Together" Meetup met at the Caribou Lake Trailhead in the Caribou Wilderness in the middle of the night... around midnight. Lorrie and I were there around 7:30pm so after we put up our tent and built a fire, we warded off the bears by making a lot of noise. Four plus hours! We were up around 9am and out on the trail around 11am. Got to our camp at North Divide Lake around 3:30pm and set in for a cold night. Snow all around but we found a nice meadow to camp in.

Over 130 students came to the Career Services Backpack to Briefcase event participating in speed networking, real part time job interviews, and enjoying the Theater groups presentation of Interviews Gone Wild.
It's a cheap shot of a photo title, but this has nothing to do with sexuality.... I just need to start taking the backpack out for a trip more often.

The Backpack's 2011 Staff Xmas party was a sunset cruise on the Jolly Roger Pirate boat in the Waterfront in Cape Town. Everyone had to dress like a pirate. After the cruise we had a spitbraai dinner.
We reduced our carbon footprint by walking to the bus stop and taking the MyCiti Bus to the Waterfont, and our meal was enjoyed with biodegradable crockery and cutlery.

Megan came over tonight and she brought this way awesome backpack her dad found in her Aunt and Uncles garage. It has a cooled compartment, two wine satchels and opens up to reveal plates, utensils, napkins, wine glasses and a cutting board. We were going to go try to see Avatar for the second time but decided we were both too tired and Megan hadn't been to sleep in some insane amount of hours (30hrs or something she worked the Midnight shift) so we rented Terminator Salvation, Surrogates, House of 1000 Corpses and Chocolat. We watched Chocolat and went to bed around 2 or so. I have class in the morning. Oh and I did my Black Squares #2 in bed on Megan's computer while she slept.

We followed the trail out of Rock Harbor heading southwest along the shore, aiming for a little campground called Three Mile. Three Mile is, not surprisingly, three miles away from Rock Harbor. I feel like most Isle Royale backpackers think a three-mile hike from Rock Harbor the first day is a little wimpy, so the majority aims for a campground another two miles past that called Daisy Farm. This leaves the lean-to shelters at Three Mile for wimps like us.
If you've been following this page for a long, long time, you might recall that we've tried backpacker camping a few times, and it's almost always ended in disaster. We had some success when we came to Isle Royale in 2011, but that just involved going to Three Mile and back. (And then getting stranded an extra night because the boat didn't run.) Any real attempt at backpacking resulted in pain, either because we tried hauling 50-pound packs five miles up a vertical cliff or because we spent a night getting attacked repeatedly by storms while trying to sleep in a leaky tent. We're not really good at true backpacking, and we have almost no experience at anything lasting longer than a night.
But our past failures have taught us some lessons, and they're teaching us more all the time. For instance, that pack on Robin's back is about 10 pounds lighter than it was the last time we tried this, coming in at 31.49 pounds. My own pack weighed 40.37 pounds. I still think we could shave about 20% off those totals if we tried for less redundancy, but that's better than it was before.
