On October 15th, 2005 I went backpacking for three days into the Enchantments, a beautiful area of lakes and mountains in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. After 10 miles of hauling my camera and backpacking gear I arrived in the plateau of the Enchantments in a storm. The wind was blowing so hard that I spent an hour looking for a campsite that was somewhat sheltered. I couldn't sleep because the noise of the wind in the trees and on the rocks and since I was worried that my tent will break down.
The next morning the wind was gone. And fog had transformed the already beautiful landscape into a magical place. The bright yellow of the larches' needles covered the ground and was swimming in the lakes. It was completely silent. I did not meet anybody for the next two days. I was in a state of wonder. And graetful for being able to be in such a beautiful place and being able to photograph it!
Shot on Fuji Velvia 50 slide film using a Canon Eos-1. Scanned on Minolta Dimage Elite II Scanner. Minimal editing in Photoshop to adjust levels.

Third shot in the current series of hiking locations I loved during my backpacking days. Obviously this isn't a "location shot", but it does represent the very first collection I started, the first time I began to shoot in categories.
I remember setting this shot up, lying on the rocks and getting the right background for my low growing subject, although the precise location is lost to memory. Jasper, I think. I don't think I've made a better image of this species in all the years since.

I tasked myself with backpacking across the grid and exploring all the Linden Routes. I started on the Atoll continent, and I loaded up on the Second Life Railroad and found this lovely little property owned by a group called Lucky 13. At the central station of Utrecht I was waiting at a burger king. While waiting I struck upon this guy, with his unique style backpack.
Painted today with some mates, it was cool, tried out something different. Started to get really dark when we nearly finished, it was hard to see, outline is messy.

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it's possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.
The journey to the waterfall is a true challenge, yet also a breathtaking experience. The trail winds through rugged, arid terrain with steep inclines and loose rocks. Hikers must be well-prepared, as certain sections can be demanding and exhausting. However, the reward upon arrival is well worth it: a refreshing breeze from the waterfall and a stunning panoramic view. In the photo, Kanitha is seen reaching the Arsha Waterfall after an adventurous climb, set against the rugged, mountainous landscape of the Kazbegi region. The waterfall in the foreground contrasts strikingly with the dry surroundings, creating a spectacular natural destination. The steep slopes and untouched wilderness highlight both the challenge and the extraordinary beauty of this remote location..
Nabij het dorp Arsha in de Kazbegi-regio ligt de Arsha-waterval, op ongeveer vijf kilometer van Stepantsminda Kazbegi. De wandeling naar de waterval wordt als eenvoudig beschouwd en duurt doorgaans drie tot vier uur. Het pad is ongebaand maar goed begaanbaar, omringd door weelderige weiden en biedt prachtige uitzichten op de omliggende bergen. Toch blijft de tocht een ware uitdaging, maar tegelijkertijd een prachtige ervaring. Het landschap verandert geleidelijk van glooiende weiden naar ruigere, drogere grond met steile hellingen en losse stenen. Wandelaars moeten goed voorbereid zijn, want sommige delen van de route kunnen veeleisend en vermoeiend zijn. Maar eenmaal aangekomen, wacht de beloning: een verkoelende bries van de waterval en een adembenemend uitzicht. Op de foto is te zien hoe Kanitha, na een avontuurlijke klim, aankomt bij de Arsha-waterval, gelegen in het ruige, bergachtige landschap van Kazbegi. De waterval op de voorgrond vormt een sterk contrast met het dorre terrein, wat bijdraagt aan de ongerepte en serene sfeer. De steile hellingen en ongerepte wildernis onderstrepen zowel de uitdaging als de ongekende schoonheid van deze afgelegen plek. Nog iets verder ligt de Toti-waterval, bereikbaar via een steil pad dat bovenlangs de Arsha-waterval loopt. Deze waterval biedt spectaculaire panoramische uitzichten en is een ideale plek voor een picknick. Bezoekers kunnen hier genieten van de rust, de natuur en zelfs een verfrissende douche nemen in het heldere water. Voor de echte avonturiers is het mogelijk om verder te trekken naar de nabijgelegen Gergeti-gletsjer, wat de wandeling tot een dagvullende activiteit maakt.

During World Heritage day in Bath, there was a Roman encampment at the Royal Crescent where we could see how the romans lived, fought and conquer, battle after battle to achieve one of the World's greatest Empires.
This one was taken when the legion was displaying the way the army would travel and what would they carry with them. These were called the Marius backpack.

He stood on the edge of the world, a lone figure suspended between sky and stone. Before him sprawled New Zealand's Southern Alps, their peaks — Poseidon, Sarpedon, Amphion — rising like silent arguments carved from light and ice. The glacier unfurled its pale tongue, an ancient current arrested mid-sentence, its surface rippled with the memory of motion. The air shimmered, crystalline and unrepentant, a cold clarity that cut to the marrow.
Lake Agnes lay below, a still pool, dark and sharp as polished obsidian. It absorbed the landscape without a ripple, the reflection a perfect inversion—mountains upside down, the sky swallowed by earth. The scene was a paradox: immensity caught in a whisper, time paused on the brink of collapse. He felt the grass brittle beneath his boots, the wind threading through the crevices of his jacket—a touch neither warm nor cruel, merely indifferent.
For three days he had wrestled through the entrails of the land. The rainforest had closed around him with a suffocating lushness, roots coiling like serpents beneath the moss. Streams foamed with a glacial bite, the waters quick and thoughtless, bruising his ankles as he waded through. Thorned thickets tore at his skin with the intimacy of old grudges. He climbed slopes slick with rain, his body folded into painful angles, the horizon always receding. When he reached this place, the fog had been thick enough to erase the contours of the world. His tent had trembled in the night winds, the cold seeping in like an unwelcome thought.
But then dawn came, unburdened and lucid. The veil lifted, and the mountains revealed themselves in their raw articulation. They did not posture or proclaim—they simply were, immutable and unscripted. The glacier’s silence was more profound than any roar; the peaks did not loom so much as exist beyond scale.
Here, in this distilled emptiness, the trivial machinery of the world he had fled seemed absurd. The restless striving, the ceaseless revolutions of ambition and vanity—all of it shrank to the size of a pebble lost in a chasm. There was no wheel here to turn, no circuit to complete. Only the landscape, bare and relentless in its honesty.
He filled his lungs, the air sharp enough to taste. It was an act of quiet rebellion, this deliberate witnessing. In that breath, he found not freedom, but a dissolution of need. The lines between man and mountain wavered, softened by the sheer scale of indifference. If he stayed long enough, perhaps he too would become part of this tableau—his form dissolving into lichen and shadow, his presence no more than a pause in the wilderness’s endless thought.
