With a 5 minute 30 second exposure, the clouds moving behind the famed Steeple in downtown Portsmouth, NH look ghostly as blue hour, that time just after sunset when the skies turn deep blue, sets in on the streets and alleyways of Portsmouth. The white light coming down the alley is from a car that passed by at the 2 minute mark of my exposure.

The consistent hum of idling locomotives is overcome by the piecing squeal of dynamic brakes as the UP 7695 guides a heavy MROMI through Gold Run, California. After staging in Gold Run for a couple of days, the spreaders prepare to depart eastward up the mountain. The dark clouds overhead signify the end of the storm break; it’s time to get back to work.

Barry the Coal is not impressed by Empress Victoria's assertion that although 'Back in Black' is indeed a cracking album, Mr. Brian Johnson is merely a pale imitation of the late Mr. Bon Scott, lacking the deceased's chaotically unpredictable stage presence.

"Yes," she says, "Mr. Johnson certainly can sing, but the magic is missing. Angus aside, AC/DC were never the same, especially in the live environment".

Frank the Driver feels for Barry the Coal; he knows the depth of the lad's admiration for the way the band recovered from the loss of the great man and also that he holds the long departed Mr. Scott in the highest esteem.

"Never mind," thinks Frank, "this will all be forgotten once the steam is up and we get out on the road again".

A fiery Fall sunset in my back yard a few weeks ago. It had been almost 60 degrees F during the day and quickly cooled off as the sun was setting. The sun had been heating things up all day, so the clouds retained beautiful, warm colors. I didn't think of composition, rule of thirds, or any photographic "rules", I lust walked into the back yard and took 2 shots. Currently, the trees are bare and fall is quickly turning to winter.

Piazza delle Erbe (Market's square) is a square in Verona, northern Italy. It was once the town's forum during the time of the Roman Empire.

The northern side of the square is occupied by the ancient town hall, the Torre dei Lamberti, the Casa dei Giudici ("Judges' Hall") and the frescoed Mazzanti Houses. The western side, the shortest one, features the Baroque Palazzo Maffei, decorated by statues of Greek gods. It is faced by a white marble column, on which is St. Mark's Lion, symbol of the Republic of Venice.

The north-western side occupies the site of the ancient Roman Capitol Hill, which looked towards the forum. Numerous of its buildings facing the square have maintained façade frescoes. On the southern side is the crenllated Casa dei Mercanti ("House of the Merchants", also known as Domus Mercatorum), now the seat of the Banca Popolare di Verona. Other buildings, the tall houses of the Ghetto, are reminiscent of medieval tower-houses.

The square's most ancient monument is the fountain (built in 1368 by Cansignorio della Scala), surmounted by a statue called Madonna Verona, which is however a Roman sculpture dating to 380 AD. Also historical is the capitello, dating to the 13th century, during which it was used for several ceremonies, including the oath of investment of the city's medieval podestà and pretors. Towards Via Cappello is another column, with a 14th-century aedicula with reliefs of the Virgin and the Saints Zeno, Peter and Christopher

BACK IN PORT at Bonavista after 2 fabulous hours with the whales on Bonavista Puffin and Whale Tours boat! For anyone unfamiliar with Bonavista, it’s recorded as the first North American landfall for John Cabot (Giovanni Cabot’s) in 1497. The tall blue building houses a full sized replica of the sailing ship he used to cross the Atlantic. After seeing the tiny ship, I believe he would have said “BONAVISTA!!” (“Oh happy sight!!”) to any solid ground he would have seen!!

I'm back home from vacation and Heidi is enjoying her usual service levels again. While I'm starting to sort through my photos she's busy destroying the souvenirs I brought her -- birds' feathers and shells from the Channel Islands (and even a little bleached rabbit bone from the Island of Herm).

I'm never disappointed when I make the hour-long drive over the hill to Wanaka! It's beautiful over there… when I took this photo, it was a particularly crazy day because I had an amazing heli ride with Aspiring Helicopters. We went up into the snowy southern alps and had a beautiful landing at this secret snowy cabin where we had wine, cheese, and crackers. This is the view of the cabin as we flew away…

Berlin was great...driving back was tough but exciting. Stuck behind bright orange snowploughs for ages...with a beautiful white countryside as a reward. And white white white as far as the eye could see.
