Back in April.

Guys and Travel will be away until April. Kind wishes to you all and thank you for viewing.

Well I am getting back into shooting my landscapes, or at least I hope I will be able to this weekend. There are supposed to be some clouds the next few days, let's hope it makes for interesting skies to shoot.

Back Home Again

John Denver

There's a storm across the valley, clouds are rolling in

The afternoon is heavy on your shoulders

There's a truck out on the four lane, a mile or more away

The whining of his wheels just makes it colder

He's an hour away from riding on your prayers up in the sky

And ten days on the road are barely gone

There's a fire softly burning, supper's on the stove

But it's the light in your eyes that makes him warm

Hey, it's good to be back home again

Sometimes this old farm feels like a long lost friend

Yes, and hey, it's good to be back home again

Hope you like "Back Home Again"

Cheers, Mike

And just like that, my New York vacation is over. But I will be back, sooner rather than later!

Cuckoo and Sedge Warbler

Since we were already on our way back to Saksun with that last image I posted, I figured I'd share another view of the village and the landscape it inhabited. There is a fair bit to see in this isolated village. The church in Saksun is probably what attracts the most visitors, but there is also a pretty grand waterfall, a black sand beach and an ankle-twisting, slippery hike over the mountains that eventually leads to the village of Tjørnuvík. I hiked up almost to the halfway point of that hike and it was along that route that I enjoyed this view looking back. I really could just stand there and drink in the sights like this. Again, this was my first day on the islands, so I was still very much in the newly amazed frame of mind. But while the newness of it eventually wore off, the amazed part of it didn't at all. I really did love the land here. On a related note, most of the photos I had seen of the Faroes prior to this visit were taken in the late spring and summer months. During that time the Faroes Islands are greener than you could imagine. I knew they would not be as green during my visit and was prepared for the lack of greenery. What I was not prepared for was how beautiful the many shades of yellow and brown would be. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so green is something I am used to enjoying. I don't often get to see ochre landscapes like this and therefor it caught me off-guard just a little as to how much I would enjoy them. I do hope to visit the Faroe Islands in the summer sometime and see them covered in green, but I am really glad I got to see them in the spring now with this alternate color palette.

A Band called Back Chat Brass Playing at the Manchester Jazz Festival Sat 5 Aug 2017

I was planning on capturing the atmosphere at this corner for a long time, but was always afraid to do it since - as you can see - this is not the best part of town. Finally I ventured into the project. The whole mambo jumbo was necessary to catch this scene: Long time night exposures and HDR exposure bracketing and panorama series. So I spent quite some time there taking pictures. And sure enough: People approached me (not friendly at all) asking what the hell I was taking pictures here for. I managed to engage them in a bit of conversation while my camera was quietly finishing the last long time exposure. And then I quickly packed up my stuff and moved on before I'd ended up in a hospital. I hope the final picture was worth it...

Forth & Clyde Canal

This is an image from our day trip to Glen Coe a week ago, when lets say we had one of the best days photography for a long time. The weather was perfect, the only problem was we left before the stunning sunset that evening, after thinking it wasn't going to turn into anything.

As we were heading back towards Helensburgh and Dumbarton the skies started to do something, going through every possible sunset colour there is. I decided to try and find a subject somewhere nearby and after living in the area for six years I knew a couple of spots. I chose the Forth & Clyde Canal near Bowling.

This was one of those times when the stop paid off and the shot worked out.

Please feel free to share with your friends and family if you would like to.
